Employment contract, contract of mandate or civil-law contract valid for at least 6 months
Gross monthly salary of at least PLN 13,355.34, the threshold in force from 9 February 2026 (150% of the average national salary as published annually by GUS)
Higher-education qualification, or 5 years of comparable professional experience in the field
Health insurance

How long it lasts: Up to 3 years, renewable.
Path to permanent residence: Blue Card time counts on an accelerated basis toward permanent residence, which is otherwise available after 5 years of continuous residence. Citizenship generally needs 3 years holding permanent residence on top.
Cost: PLN 640 permit fee plus PLN 100 for the residence card.
Processing time: Legally 60 days from a complete file; in practice voivodeship offices often take considerably longer.

Worth knowing

Changing employer no longer requires a new permit — only a notification to the voivode. That is a material improvement over the standard work permit and the main reason to prefer the Blue Card if you qualify.
After 12 months of residence you gain facilitated mobility to work in other EU states, which the national permit does not offer.
The threshold is recalculated annually against GUS data; a contract that qualified last year may not this year.

Cost: PLN 440 permit fee plus PLN 100 for the card.
Processing time: Officially 60 days; the practical wait in Warsaw and Kraków has often run to many months.

Worth knowing

The card names your employer, position and salary. Change any of them and you generally need a new permit — the single biggest practical difference from the Blue Card.
You may legally stay in Poland while a timely renewal is pending, but travel outside the Schengen area on that basis is restricted; get the stamp before booking anything.
Two 2026 filing changes: residence applications moved to the MOS portal only from 27 April 2026, and non-EU nationals must apply for a PESEL number in person from 1 January 2026. Postal PESEL applications and paper residence filings no longer work — a common reason applications are returned unprocessed.
Poland has no digital nomad visa. Remote work for a foreign employer is not a basis for residence, though self-employment through a Polish company is a workaround people use.

Worth knowing

A company that exists but neither profits nor employs will fail at renewal. The economic test bites at the second application, not the first — which is when people are surprised.
Poland's social-contribution and tax treatment of company directors is genuinely complex; get Polish advice before choosing the vehicle.
