Banking🇵🇱 Krakow, Poland

Opening an account — and the second account contractors need

Polish retail banking is among the most advanced in Europe and opening an account is genuinely easy. Two things are worth doing deliberately rather than by accident: getting your profil zaufany issued through the bank app, because it is now a prerequisite for the MOS residence filing, and — if you will contract on B2B, as much of Kraków's IT sector does — opening a separate business account, because a personal one cannot be listed on the tax authority's whitelist.

Total cost
Most current accounts are free subject to a minimum monthly inflow or a few card payments. Domestic transfers and BLIK are free. Business accounts often carry a small monthly fee.
Time needed
Same day to a few days.
Validity
No renewal, but banks re-verify identity documents periodically and will freeze outgoing transfers if yours has expired on file.

Medium confidence·New arrivals in Kraków, and anyone who will invoice through a Polish sole trader registration. Retail banking is national; the practical differences are between institutions, not between cities.

Before you start

  • Passport and a residence document, visa or registration certificate
  • PESEL, preferred by most banks and required by some
  • A Polish address
  • A NIP and a CEIDG registration, if you are opening a business account

Step-by-step

  1. 1

Pick a bank on English-language service, not on branch count

mBank, ING, Santander Bank Polska and Millennium have the strongest English apps. PKO BP and Pekao are the largest but their branch service outside the centre is Polish-only in practice.

Open the account, online or in branch

Several banks complete onboarding remotely with courier identity verification. Where a branch visit is needed, confirm in advance that the specific branch has English-speaking staff.

  3. 3

Issue your trusted profile through the bank app

Most Polish banks can create your profil zaufany in minutes. This unlocks e-PIT, NFZ services and, since April 2026, the MOS residence portal — so do it in the same session rather than queueing for it at an office later.

    Turn on BLIK

BLIK generates a six-digit code in the app for card-free ATM withdrawals, online checkout and instant transfers by phone number. It is close to universal in Poland and cash is genuinely rare.

Open a separate business account if you will invoice

Sole traders must report a business account to the tax authority, and only business accounts can appear on the biała lista whitelist. Personal accounts cannot be registered on it.

Update the bank when your residence document changes

When the karta pobytu finally arrives after your long Małopolska wait, take it to the bank. Accounts opened on a visa are periodically re-verified and can be restricted if the document on file has expired.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Your bank is the fastest route to the government identity you now need for immigration.

The profil zaufany issued inside a banking app takes minutes and unlocks e-PIT, NFZ appointment services and the MOS residence portal. Since MOS became the only channel for residence filings in April 2026, that makes the bank account a genuine dependency of your immigration timeline rather than a convenience.

A B2B contractor needs a business account for a specific legal reason.

Payments over PLN 15,000 to a supplier must go to an account listed on the Ministry of Finance whitelist, or the payer loses the deduction and can be liable for the VAT. Personal accounts cannot be whitelisted. Kraków clients who pay contractors monthly are alive to this, and being paid into a personal account is a conversation you will have exactly once.

Some banks will open an account before you have PESEL, and it is worth asking which.

With a Małopolska residence timeline measured in months, waiting for every document before starting is a mistake. Several banks onboard foreigners on a passport and visa alone, with a narrower product range that you upgrade later. Ask the question specifically rather than assuming you are blocked.

Cash has genuinely receded here and BLIK filled the gap.

Poland skipped the cheque era and went straight to contactless and phone payments. Splitting a bill, paying a deposit, buying a tram ticket and withdrawing cash without a card all run through BLIK. Newcomers who never set it up end up doing everything the slow way and carrying notes nobody around them is carrying.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Delaying the trusted profile and discovering it blocks the MOS residence filing.
  • Invoicing Polish clients into a personal account that cannot be whitelisted.
  • Waiting on PESEL when a bank would have opened an account without it.
  • Assuming branch staff speak English outside the central districts.
  • Letting the residence document on file expire and having transfers frozen.
