Temporary residence applications go through mos.cudzoziemcy.gov.pl only. Paper filings are no longer processed and are returned, which costs months rather than days.

Book the in-person appointment immediately
After the electronic submission you must attend the Wydział Spraw Cudzoziemców at ul. Chmielna 74/76 to give fingerprints and a handwritten signature and to show originals. This slot, not the decision, is what usually sets the schedule.

Collect the stamp, then wait for the SMS
The stamp confirming a lodged case keeps your stay legal for the whole procedure. The office notifies you by SMS when the card is ready and collection is by separate appointment.

Get PESEL from your own municipality
PESEL and meldunek are municipal, so a Gdańsk resident goes to the Urząd Miejski on ul. Nowe Ogrody or a district ZOM office, while Sopot and Gdynia residents go to theirs. Since 1 January 2026 most non-EU nationals must attend in person.

Things most newcomers don’t know

The voivodeship you file in is decided by your address, and Pomorskie is a genuine advantage.

Application volumes since 2020 have overwhelmed Mazowieckie and Małopolskie, where a work-based card commonly takes eight to fourteen months. Pomorskie carries a smaller caseload and moves faster. If you have a choice of Polish cities and a long wait would be disruptive — a pregnancy, a family reunification, a job that requires travel — this is a real factor and almost nobody weighs it.

All three Tricity municipalities share one immigration office and three of everything else.

Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia are all in Pomorskie, so the residence case goes to Chmielna 74/76 wherever you live. PESEL, meldunek, school catchments and local charges are municipal and separate. Living in Sopot while working in Gdańsk is entirely normal and means dealing with two town halls — not a problem, but worth knowing before you sign a lease across a boundary.

The stamp makes your stay legal and does not make your travel legal.

Once the application is accepted, a passport stamp keeps your presence lawful throughout the procedure, including after the visa expires. It is not a visa. Leaving the Schengen area on the stamp alone with an expired visa risks refusal on re-entry — a particular trap in a city with cheap direct flights to Scandinavia and the UK.

Book the biometrics appointment before your documents feel finished.

In Pomorskie the electronic submission is quick and the appointment queue is what actually consumes calendar time. Every week spent perfecting attachments is a week not spent in the queue, and missing documents can be supplemented afterwards. People reverse the order and then wonder why a fast office produced a slow outcome.

Common mistakes to avoid

Posting a paper application, which is no longer processed.
Perfecting the file before booking the in-person appointment.
Assuming the residence permit brings PESEL with it — it is a separate municipal procedure.
Leaving the Schengen area on a lodging stamp with an expired visa.
Taking a standard work permit when your salary clears the Blue Card threshold and would buy employer mobility.
