Check whether the exchange applies to you at all

Commission a sworn translation
Only a court-registered sworn translator produces an accepted document. An ordinary professional translation, however good, is refused at the counter — this is the most common cause of a failed application.

Take the theory exam if your country is outside the conventions
The city first generates a PKK candidate profile; only then can you book at WORD Wrocław. The theory test is available in English and the highway code differs enough from most countries that studying it is not a formality.

The foreign document is surrendered and returned to the issuing authority. You cannot hold both, which matters if you expect to move on again.

Sort parking before you sort the car
Wrocław has steadily expanded its paid parking zones across the centre and inner districts. A residents' permit is available for your own zone but not for the whole city, and the tram network reaches most destinations faster than driving does at peak.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Wrocław has no clean transport zone, and that is a real cost difference from Kraków.

Kraków's Strefa Czystego Transportu took effect in January 2026 over roughly 60% of that city, camera-enforced. Wrocław shelved its own scheme after four years of preparation, on the basis that annual nitrogen dioxide readings sit under the 40 µg/m³ limit, and has ruled one out before 2028. If you are choosing between the two cities and already own an older diesel, or plan to import one, that is a concrete financial difference rather than an abstraction — but the position is reviewed against the air quality data every year, so check before buying for the long term.

The sworn translator requirement is the single most common rejection.

A tłumacz przysięgły is a court-registered profession with a ministry number and a physical stamp. HR departments and translation agencies produce excellent documents that are nonetheless not accepted, because the legal requirement is about the translator's status rather than the quality of the translation. It costs under PLN 150 to do correctly.

The six-month clock runs from residence, and insurance is the real exposure.

Once your foreign licence has lapsed for Polish purposes, you are driving without a valid licence in the eyes of an insurer as much as a traffic officer. A claim on a policy where the driver was not validly licensed is where this becomes expensive, and it happens long before anyone stops you at the roadside.

You need the PKK profile before you can book the exam, and people book first.

If your licence comes from a country outside the Vienna and Geneva conventions, the city generates a Profil Kandydata na Kierowcę before WORD will let you register for the theory test. Turning up at WORD without it wastes a slot in a queue that runs weeks. The English-language theory exam is available, which many applicants do not realise.

Common mistakes to avoid

Submitting a translation that is not from a sworn translator.
Letting the six-month window close and exposing yourself on insurance.
Booking a WORD exam before the city has issued your PKK profile.
Assuming the theory exam is a formality — the Polish highway code differs substantially.
Buying a car for a Wrocław move without checking whether an emission zone is on the city's agenda.
