Your phone can leave EU roaming without you leaving the neighbourhood.

Nicosia's Old Town sits directly against the buffer zone, and handsets there sometimes register on networks that are not part of the EU roam-like-at-home regime. The result is a bill for calls made from your own street. Manual network selection, or disabling data roaming near the line, is the fix, and it is specific to this city.

A passport is enough for prepaid, so you can have a Cypriot number in your first week. Postpaid contracts wait for the ARC and a local bank account. Sequence it that way rather than trying to sign a contract on arrival.

All three networks serve Nicosia and the motorways well. The gaps are in the Troodos valleys and parts of the rural Mesaoria, and they differ between operators. If your weekends are in the mountains, ask about that specifically rather than comparing bundle prices.
