Before you start
- ARC or identity document

- GESY beneficiary registration
- A personal doctor with capacity on their list
Step-by-step

Register as a GESY beneficiary
Through the beneficiary portal or in person. The GHS contact centre on 17000 answers in English, weekdays 8am to 8pm and Saturday mornings.

Choose a personal doctor with capacity
Specialists are reached by referral from your personal doctor, so this choice shapes your whole experience. Lists have capacity limits — check who is accepting patients before choosing.
OnlineWho: You - 3
Understand the co-payments
Visits to your personal doctor are free; specialists, laboratory tests and prescriptions carry co-payments with an annual ceiling.
In personWho: You - 4
Know where the emergency departments are
Nicosia General Hospital is the island's principal referral centre and the main public emergency department for the capital. Several large private hospitals also serve the city.

Check whether investment income attracts the GESY charge
Dividends and other income attract 2.65% within the €180,000 cap, and non-domiciled status does not exempt you from it.

Things most newcomers don’t know
Nicosia General is the referral centre for the whole island.
For anything complex, patients from Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos are referred to Nicosia. Living here means the specialist and the follow-up are local rather than a two-hour round trip. For a family managing an ongoing condition, that is a real and rarely-mentioned advantage of the capital.

Contributions start with employment; registration does not.
The 2.65% deduction begins when your job does, whether or not you have registered as a GESY beneficiary or chosen a personal doctor. Newcomers routinely contribute for months before registering. Do it in week one — it takes minutes and the alternative is paying for a system you cannot use.

Non-dom status does not touch the GESY charge on dividends.
The Special Defence Contribution exemption is what non-dom status delivers. GESY is a separate levy and dividends attract 2.65% regardless of domicile, up to the €180,000 income cap. Advisers describing '0% on dividends' are describing SDC only.

Health care across the buffer zone is a separate system entirely.
GESY operates in the government-controlled areas. Facilities on the other side of the Green Line are not part of it and are not covered. In a city divided down the middle, knowing which side your nearest emergency department is on is not an abstract question.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Contributing for months without registering as a beneficiary.
- Assuming non-dom status exempts dividends from the GESY charge.
- Choosing a personal doctor whose list is full.
- Expecting specialists and prescriptions to be free rather than co-paid.
- Assuming a Digital Nomad Visa gives GESY access. It does not.
