Before you start
- A job offer advertised in the EU/EEA for at least ten days, normally via Platsbanken
- Employer-provided health, life, employment and occupational pension insurance
- Terms of employment matching the applicable collective agreement
- A Malmö address before you can complete registration
- For a Danish job, a separate Danish work authorisation if you are not an EU/EEA or Nordic citizen
Step-by-step
- 1
Establish which country you will actually be employed in
This is the first question in Malmö and it is not asked often enough. A Swedish residence and work permit authorises work in Sweden. It does not authorise employment with a Danish employer in Denmark — that is a Danish immigration matter with its own routes and its own processing times. EU/EEA and Nordic citizens move freely and can simply do both.

Employer advertises and offers, for a Swedish job
The vacancy must be advertised in Sweden and the EU/EEA for at least ten days before an offer can support a permit. The employer then makes a written offer on Migrationsverket's form and the relevant union gives an opinion on the terms.

Apply to Migrationsverket online
You apply, not the employer, using the offer reference. The fee is SEK 2,200 for the applicant with separate fees for family. Check the salary against the current floor on the day you apply rather than the day you signed.

Give biometrics and collect the residence permit card
For a permit longer than three months you attend a Swedish mission abroad for fingerprints and a photo. The card is what you travel on; the decision letter alone is not.

Register your move with Skatteverket
Go to a Skatteverket service office with passport, permit card and evidence of your address. If you intend to live in Sweden at least a year you are entered in the population register and assigned a personnummer; if not you get a samordningsnummer, which is a much weaker instrument.

Use the Øresunddirekt information centre if the job is Danish
The joint Swedish–Danish information service at Hjälmaregatan 3, next to Malmö Centralstation, has Skatteverket, Försäkringskassan, Arbetsförmedlingen, Länsstyrelsen Skåne and Region Skåne staff in one room with no appointment needed. It is the only place in either country designed to answer a cross-border question in a single conversation.

Documents you’ll need
- Passport valid for the full permit period
- Migrationsverket residence permit card
- Written offer of employment and the union's opinion
- Proof of your Malmö address for registration
- Marriage or birth certificates for family members, often needing apostille and translation
- For a Danish job: a Danish personal tax number (and, if applicable, Danish work authorisation)
Things most newcomers don’t know
A Swedish permit is not a Danish one, and Malmö is the city where that distinction bites.
Roughly 17,000 people commute from Sweden into Denmark for work. For EU/EEA and Nordic citizens that is frictionless. For a third-country national on a Swedish work permit it is not: employment with a Danish employer in Denmark requires Danish authorisation, and a Swedish residence permit card does not supply it. People accept Copenhagen offers on the assumption that living in Malmö solves the problem, and it does not.

The Swedish salary floor changed on 1 June 2026 and the number is indexed, not fixed.
The old maintenance requirement was replaced by a hard threshold of 90% of the Swedish median salary — SEK 34,470 a month when the rules took effect — recalculated from Statistics Sweden's published median. A defined exemption list covering several IT and engineering roles, care work, agriculture, welders and staff of early-stage tech and life-science firms is assessed at 75% instead. Quote the mechanism, check the current figure.

The single most useful address in Malmö for a newcomer is a government office next to the station.
Øresunddirekt's information centre at Hjälmaregatan 3 pools staff from five Swedish authorities into one walk-in service specifically for people whose life crosses the strait. A tax question, a social insurance question and a healthcare registration question about the same Danish job can be answered in one sitting, for free, without an appointment. There is nothing equivalent anywhere else in Sweden and very few arrivals are told about it.

Sweden has no digital nomad visa, and Denmark does not have one either.
There is no Swedish residence route based on working remotely for a foreign employer — the alternatives are a sponsored work permit, the self-employment permit that Migrationsverket audits harshly at extension, or study. Denmark has no nomad visa either, so the strait offers no back door. Guides describing the Öresund region as nomad-friendly are describing the lifestyle, not the law.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a Swedish residence permit lets a third-country national take a job in Copenhagen.
- Assuming the salary that qualified last year still qualifies — the Swedish floor is indexed and moved on 1 June 2026.
- Accepting a samordningsnummer without realising how much it locks you out of.
- Changing employer within the first two years without a new permit application.
- Not using Øresunddirekt, and instead assembling cross-border answers from forums.
