Which country taxes your salary is set by the Öresund Agreement inside the Nordic tax treaty. Which country's social security you belong to is set by EU Regulation 883/2004 and the bilateral Öresundsöverenskommelsen. They are separate instruments, administered by separate authorities, and satisfying one does not satisfy the other. Broadly: for tax, you must be physically present in Denmark for more than half your total working hours in any twelve-month period to stay taxed there; for social security, working 25% or more of your time in Sweden throws you into the Swedish system unless the Nordic arrangement covers you. Get both answers in writing before you agree a hybrid schedule.

In July 2023 the EU introduced a framework agreement letting cross-border teleworkers work up to 50% from home and stay in the employer country's social security. It applies only when both states have signed. Sweden signed with effect from 1 July 2023; Denmark announced on 30 October 2023 that it would not. The Belgian depositary's list of signatories still does not include Denmark. What fills the gap for Öresund commuters is the narrower bilateral Öresundsöverenskommelsen, which needs the Swedish work to be for the same Danish employer and at least half your time to be in Denmark. Anyone who read a generic EU explainer and assumed two days a week at home in Malmö was safe should check with Försäkringskassan.

Øresunddirekt is a joint Swedish–Danish public information service, and its information centre at Hjälmaregatan 3 next to Malmö Centralstation puts staff from Skatteverket, Försäkringskassan, Arbetsförmedlingen, Länsstyrelsen Skåne and Region Skåne in the same room, without an appointment. Nowhere else in either country can you ask a tax question, a social insurance question and a health-registration question about the same job in one sitting. It is free, it is genuinely the most useful thing in Malmö for a newcomer, and almost nobody arriving knows it exists.

Boplats Syd mediated 9,350 apartments in 2025 across 92 landlords, most of them in Malmö, and the median queue time of the people who got one was 2.1 years. About a third of all flats went to applicants with under a year of queue time, and half the student flats went to people with under nine months. Compare that with Gothenburg's average of nearly seven years and Stockholm's inner-city decade-plus. Register with Boplats Syd on day one anyway — but here, unlike in the other two, a first-hand regulated contract is a realistic plan rather than a fantasy.

Copenhagen Airport at Kastrup has its own station on the Öresund line and is roughly twenty minutes from Malmö Centralstation — closer and vastly better connected than Malmö's own airport at Sturup. Trains run every twenty minutes and take about 35 minutes to Copenhagen Central. Living in Malmö means treating a major European hub as your local airport, which is the single best practical argument for the city.

Skåne is the country's southern agricultural plain: mildest winters, longest growing season, most sunshine hours, and terrain flat enough that cycling is the default rather than a choice. Malmö has built its infrastructure around that, and a bike plus a Skånetrafiken card covers almost everything. What it does not give you is Swedish winter scenery — for snow you go north, and the local complaint is grey drizzle rather than cold.
