Fix your residency start date
Permanent visa or a Brazilian employment contract makes you resident from the day you land. On a temporary visa, including VITEM XIV, you stay non-resident until you have completed 183 days of presence within a twelve-month period and become resident on day 184 — non-consecutive days count, and if you do not reach 184 days inside those twelve months the count restarts from your next entry.

Start carnê-leão immediately if you earn from abroad
Residents receiving income from foreign sources or from individuals must compute and pay income tax monthly, due by the last working day of the following month. This catches salaried arrivals used to withholding, and the interest and penalties accrue quietly all year.

Understand what a PJ offer actually is before you accept it
Most Florianópolis technology roles are offered as pessoa jurídica contracts: you register a company, invoice monthly, and are taxed under Simples Nacional rather than on a payslip. You gain a much lower effective rate; you lose the CLT package — paid holiday, thirteenth salary, FGTS, notice, unemployment insurance — and you carry the administrative load.

Get an accountant if you go PJ
A Brazilian company means monthly DAS payments, an annual declaration, municipal ISS registration and a pro-labore decision that determines your INSS contribution and therefore your future pension and sick pay. A contador costs a few hundred reais a month and is genuinely not optional.

File the annual return between March and May
The Declaração de Ajuste Anual covers the previous calendar year and is filed through Receita Federal's software or the Meu Imposto de Renda app. Late filing attracts an automatic minimum penalty whether or not tax is owed.

File the Comunicação de Saída Definitiva when you leave
Residency does not end because you boarded a plane. The communication is filed from the date of departure up to the last day of February of the following calendar year, followed by the final Declaração de Saída Definitiva. Without both, Receita Federal keeps treating you as resident and taxable on worldwide income for the first twelve consecutive months of absence, and only from the thirteenth month as a non-resident.

Documents you’ll need
- CPF
- Informe de rendimentos from each Brazilian payer, or your company's invoices if PJ
- Records of foreign income and any foreign tax paid
- Medical, education and dependant receipts with the provider's CPF/CNPJ
- Bank, investment and asset positions as at 31 December
Things most newcomers don’t know
Almost every technology job on this island is offered as a PJ contract, and the trade is real.
You invoice through your own company, pay a fraction of the employee tax rate, and give up the entire CLT package: paid holiday, the thirteenth salary, FGTS severance deposits, notice periods and unemployment insurance. A PJ rate that looks generous against a CLT salary can be worse once you price the benefits you are replacing yourself. Compare total packages, not headline numbers.

ISS is municipal, and Florianópolis is not the only municipality in this metropolitan area.
The service tax on a consultancy's invoices is set by the municipality where the company is established, and the island, São José, Palhoça and Biguaçu are separate municipalities with their own rates and their own rules. Companies here do sometimes register on the mainland for that reason. It is worth one conversation with an accountant before you incorporate rather than after.

Completing 184 days of presence in a twelve-month period makes you taxable on worldwide income.
Everyone calls this the 183-day rule; the threshold is passing it, so residence attaches on day 184. The days need not be consecutive, so a nomad who spends four months here, leaves, and returns for three more has crossed the line without a single long stay. From that date Brazil taxes global salary, capital gains and investment income. On an island that markets itself to nomads specifically, this is the fact that most reliably arrives a year late.

Leaving without the Comunicação de Saída Definitiva costs you a further twelve months of Brazilian tax residence.
Residence does not end automatically. File the exit communication and the final departure return and you are non-resident from the date you left. Skip them and IN SRF 208/2002 keeps you taxed as a resident on worldwide income for the first twelve consecutive months of absence, dropping to non-resident treatment only from the thirteenth month. Nothing tells you it has gone wrong — the discovery usually comes years later when a CPF is flagged as irregular or a Brazilian bank freezes an account you forgot you had.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Crossing the 184th day of presence unnoticed and becoming taxable on worldwide income from that date.
- Accepting a PJ rate without pricing the CLT benefits you are giving up.
- Registering a company without an accountant and missing monthly DAS obligations.
- Not paying carnê-leão monthly on foreign income and accruing a year of interest.
- Leaving Brazil without filing the Comunicação de Saída Definitiva.
