Before you start
- CPF, for the Cartão Nacional de Saúde
- Proof of address, which determines which Centro de Saúde is yours
- Private insurance valid in Brazil, which is a condition of the digital nomad visa rather than an option
- Employer plan enrolment where offered
Step-by-step
- 1
Register at the Centro de Saúde covering your address
Florianópolis assigns residents to a neighbourhood health centre and a family health team by catchment. Take your CPF and proof of address; the Cartão Nacional de Saúde is issued free and links you to a named team rather than an anonymous queue.

Understand what the island's SUS does well
Primary care coverage here is close to universal and comparatively well funded, and vaccination, maternity, emergency and chronic disease management through SUS are genuinely good. The Hospital Universitário at UFSC and the Hospital Governador Celso Ramos carry the complex work.

Check whether your private plan covers you off the island
Some high-complexity treatment in Santa Catarina is concentrated in Joinville, Blumenau or referred to Curitiba and Porto Alegre. A cheap regional plan may cover Florianópolis and nothing beyond it. Ask specifically about abrangência — the geographic scope — not just the hospital list.

Buy or enrol, and read the carências
Waiting periods run to 24 hours for emergencies, up to 180 days for most procedures, 300 days for childbirth and up to 24 months for declared pre-existing conditions. Corporate group plans often waive or shorten them, which is a strong argument for the employer route where one exists.

Learn to read a rip current before you swim
Bombeiros lifeguards staff the open Atlantic beaches during the summer season and largely stand down for the rest of the year. Praia Mole, Joaquina, Moçambique and Campeche have strong, persistent rips. Learn the visual signs — a darker channel of calmer-looking water with a break in the wave line — and never swim an unguarded beach alone.

Keep the mosquito calendar in mind in summer
Santa Catarina has had dengue transmission in recent seasons and the state runs vaccination and control campaigns. Standing water on a balcony or in a garden is the actual mechanism. Check what the state health secretariat is currently recommending each December rather than assuming the south is exempt.

Things most newcomers don’t know
Florianópolis's primary care is genuinely strong, and registering at the right Centro de Saúde is how you access it.
The municipality built out family health team coverage across the whole island, which means a registered resident has an assigned team rather than a walk-in queue. Newcomers who buy private insurance skip registration entirely and then have nowhere to go for a routine vaccination, a repeat prescription or a yellow fever jab. The card is free and takes one visit.

The lifeguard service is seasonal; the rip currents are year-round.
The Bombeiros post guards on the ocean beaches through the summer season and withdraw most of them afterwards. Autumn and spring bring the best surf and the emptiest beaches, which is exactly the combination that drowns competent swimmers. Learning to spot a vala — the calm-looking darker channel where water is running seaward — is the highest-value ten minutes of research anyone moving here can do.

Check the geographic scope of a private plan, not only the hospital list.
Santa Catarina concentrates some high-complexity treatment away from the capital, and a plan sold as covering Florianópolis may not follow you to Joinville, Curitiba or São Paulo if that is where a specialist procedure needs to happen. Abrangência is a separate contract term from the hospital network and it is the one people discover at the worst possible moment.

The nomad visa requires private cover, and generic travel insurance often does not qualify.
VITEM XIV conditions residence on holding health insurance valid in Brazil for the duration of the stay. A short-term travel policy with a trip-length cap does not satisfy it, and a renewal application can be refused on that basis. Buy a policy written for residence in Brazil, and keep the certificate with your immigration file rather than in an email archive.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Never registering for a Cartão SUS because you have private cover.
- Swimming an unguarded ocean beach outside the summer season without knowing what a rip looks like.
- Choosing a plan on premium alone and finding it does not follow you off the island.
- Assuming a travel insurance policy satisfies the nomad visa's health cover condition.
- Not declaring a pre-existing condition, which can void cover rather than merely delay it.
