Things most newcomers don’t know

The psychological assessment is compulsory and nobody arrives expecting it.

It is not a formality bolted onto the medical — it is a separate appointment at a separate accredited clinic, an hour or two of testing, with its own fee and its own waiting list. Drivers converting a thirty-year clean European licence still sit it. Booking it in the same week you start the process is what turns a two-month conversion into a four-week one.

Florianópolis is the least car-optional major city on this list.

There is no metro, no commuter rail and no tram, and the bus network is built around interchange terminals rather than direct links, so a cross-island trip often means two buses and a terminal wait. If you live in the Lagoa, Campeche or the north beaches and work anywhere else, the practical choice is a car or a scooter. Budget for it before you commit to a beach neighbourhood.
