What your passport gets you at the border — and what it takes to actually stay.
North Macedonia passport holders need a visa arranged in advance to enter Senegal, usually through an embassy, consulate or accredited visa centre.
This is short-stay visitor policy only. It does not let you work, study or settle in Senegal — that needs a residence permit.
Anyone taking a job in Senegal and staying beyond three months. Two instruments from two ministries: the Direction générale du Travail et de la Sécurité sociale stamps the contract, and the Direction de la Police des Étrangers et des Titres de Voyage issues the residence card. Citizens of the fifteen ECOWAS member states — Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, The Gambia, Burkina Faso, Niger, Benin, Togo, Côte d'Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Cabo Verde and Senegal itself. By a wide margin the most-used route into Senegal, and the one most often described incorrectly.
Founders, traders and self-employed professionals who register a business in Senegal and hold the residence card as a commerçant rather than as somebody's employee. There is no investor visa and no golden-visa programme — this is the ordinary card with a company registration attached.

Non-ECOWAS students enrolled at a Senegalese institution — Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, Université Gaston Berger in Saint-Louis, Université Iba Der Thiam in Thiès, or one of the private schools clustered in the capital.
Retired foreigners who want to settle in Senegal on a foreign pension — a substantial community on the Petite Côte and in Saint-Louis. Be clear about what this route is: it is the ordinary carte d'identité d'étranger with proof of means attached, not a designed retirement programme.
The far west edge of the continent — every embassy, the CFA zone's central bank, and a peninsula so full the state started building a second city 30 km inland.
Senegal's second city and the holy city of the Mouride brotherhood — no alcohol, no tobacco, no secular music, and six million pilgrims for one weekend a year.
A UNESCO island at the mouth of the Senegal river — West Africa's first French settlement, and a city whose coastline is measurably moving.
Senegal's railway city and its best-kept location secret — 70 km from Dakar, half an hour from the international airport, and where the motorway to Touba begins.
