A job offer for a position listed in the Central Register of Vacancies open to Employee Card holders
Gross monthly salary at least at the Czech minimum wage — CZK 22,400 from January 2026 — and never below the usual wage for that position
At least 15 hours a week; part-time is allowed, but the salary must still clear the full minimum wage
Qualifications recognised for the role, with nostrification for regulated professions
Proof of accommodation

How long it lasts: Up to 2 years, renewable, tied to the employer and position.
Path to permanent residence: Permanent residence after 5 years of continuous residence, with a Czech language exam at A2 and an integration test. Citizenship generally needs a further period holding permanent residence.
Cost: Application fee plus the biometric card issuance; modest, and often part-borne by the employer.
Processing time: Statutory 60 days, commonly longer; the embassy appointment slot is often the real constraint.

Worth knowing

The 'usual wage' test is what actually bites. Meeting the CZK 22,400 minimum is not enough if the market rate for the role is higher — the application is assessed against both.
Changing employer or position requires notifying the Ministry and, in many cases, a new application. The card is not portable.
Nostrification (recognition of foreign qualifications) is a separate, slow process outside the immigration system and the usual cause of delay.

EU Blue Card

An employment contract of at least 6 months for a role matching that qualification level
Gross monthly salary of at least CZK 73,823 from 1 May 2026 — 1.5× the average gross annual wage for 2025 (CZK 590,580), up from CZK 68,400

How long it lasts: Up to 2 years, renewable.
Path to permanent residence: Counts toward permanent residence at 5 years, and Blue Card holders get easier intra-EU mobility than Employee Card holders.
Cost: Comparable to the Employee Card.
Processing time: Statutory 90 days for the Blue Card, in practice often longer.

Worth knowing

The threshold is re-announced annually against the average wage and takes effect on 1 May, not 1 January — so mid-year applications straddle two figures. Check which applies on your filing date; anything filed on or after 1 May 2026, including renewals and amendments, must clear CZK 73,823 or be refused.
Existing Blue Card holders on the old CZK 68,400 floor are not immediately affected, but must be brought up to the new figure at their next renewal and in any case by 30 April 2027.
If your salary is between the minimum wage and the Blue Card floor, the Employee Card is the route; there is no partial qualification.

Digital nomad visa (highly skilled IT)

Income of at least 1.5× the Czech average gross monthly salary — CZK 69,836 a month for 2026, roughly €2,800
Proof of accommodation, health insurance and a clean criminal record

How long it lasts: A long-term visa for one year first — issued for 'other' purposes if you are employed abroad, or for business self-employment if you hold a Czech trade licence — then a two-year long-term residence permit, giving three years in total.
Path to permanent residence: Counts as long-term residence, so it can contribute toward the 5-year permanent-residence clock — better than most nomad programmes, which build nothing.
Cost: CZK 2,500 for the visa, plus insurance; modest by regional standards.
Processing time: Several weeks to a few months.

Worth knowing

The eligible-nationality list is the real gate. This is not a general remote-work visa: if your passport is not on the list, no salary qualifies you.
Note that the CZK 69,836 nomad floor and the CZK 73,823 Blue Card floor are both described as '1.5× the average wage' yet differ, because they are computed off different official wage series. Do not read one across to the other.
Confirm the current income figure and eligible-country list with the Ministry: the programme is newer than the Employee Card and its parameters have moved twice already.
Unlike Portugal's or Spain's programmes, this sits inside the long-term residence framework, which is why it can count toward permanence.

Proof of funds for the period of stay at the published level

Tax and social-insurance registration once trading

How long it lasts: Up to 2 years, renewable.
Path to permanent residence: Counts toward the 5-year permanent-residence clock.
Cost: Trade licence fee is small; accountancy and mandatory social and health contributions are the real ongoing costs.
Processing time: Statutory 60–90 days depending on category.

Worth knowing

Minimum social and health insurance contributions are payable whether or not the business earns anything, and they are not trivial. Model them before choosing this over employment.
This route is often marketed as the easy way into Czechia. It is genuinely available, but the compliance load is heavier than the Employee Card's.

Long-term visa for study

Worth knowing

Free tuition applies to programmes taught in Czech, not to English-taught ones — the distinction is the whole financial picture.
Students may work without a separate permit, which is more generous than much of the EU.
