Moving from Lesotho to Mexico

What your passport gets you at the border — and what it takes to actually stay.

LesothoMexicoShort stay
Visa required

Lesotho passport holders need a visa arranged in advance to enter Mexico, usually through an embassy, consulate or accredited visa centre.

This is short-stay visitor policy only. It does not let you work, study or settle in Mexico — that needs a residence permit.

How you actually move to Mexico

Temporary residence (residente temporal) by economic solvency

Remote workers, freelancers and anyone with steady income who wants to live in Mexico without a local employer. Mexico has no dedicated digital nomad visa — this is the route people actually use.

What you need
  • Monthly income of 680 × the daily UMA evidenced by six months of bank statements — about MXN 79,800, roughly US$4,400 at the 2026 UMA of 117.31 MXN — or an average balance of 11,460 × the daily UMA over twelve months, about MXN 1.34m or roughly US$73,000
  • Add roughly 220 × the daily UMA of solvency for each dependant included
  • Alternatively: ownership of Mexican property worth around US$174,000, or capital investment in a Mexican company of at least about US$90,000
  • Application started at a Mexican consulate *outside* Mexico, then completed at an INM office within 30 days of entry
  • Passport and consular interview
How long it lasts
1 year initially, then renewable for 1, 2 or 3 years — four years total before you must convert.
Path to permanent residence
After four consecutive years as a temporary resident you can apply for permanent residence without meeting its much higher income bar. Citizenship becomes possible after five years of legal residence.
Cost
Consular fee of around US$54, then INM issuance fees scaling with the card's validity.
Processing time
Consular appointment plus a few weeks; the in-country INM step takes several more weeks.
Worth knowing
  • Treat every dollar figure above as indicative, never as the requirement. The rule is a multiple of a daily unit that INEGI re-bases every February, so the peso bar rises each year and the dollar equivalent moves with the exchange rate as well. Ask your specific consulate for its current number.
  • The thresholds vary substantially by consulate. Many apply the 2026 UMA of 117.31 MXN, but others still read the underlying rule as a multiple of the daily general minimum wage (315.04 MXN in 2026), which produces a bar roughly two and a half times higher. Which consulate you apply at genuinely changes whether you qualify.
  • The application must be started outside Mexico. You cannot enter as a tourist and convert — a mistake that costs people an entire trip.
  • Income evidence needs consistency across all six months, and consulates discount irregular deposits.
  • Mexico has NO 183-day tax residency test — that is a treaty and immigration concept, not Mexican domestic law. Under article 9 of the Código Fiscal de la Federación you become tax resident once you establish a casa habitación here; if you also keep a home abroad, the tiebreaker is your centro de intereses vitales, meaning more than 50% of your calendar-year income arises from Mexican sources or Mexico is the principal centre of your professional activities. Renting a flat and settling in can make you resident on worldwide income well before day 184.
  • Marrying a Mexican citizen or having a Mexican child is a separate, much cheaper family route with no income test.

Permanent residence (residente permanente)

Retirees with pension income, people with substantial savings, and anyone converting after four years of temporary residence.

What you need
  • Monthly income of 1,140 × the daily UMA over six months — about MXN 133,700, roughly US$7,400 at the 2026 UMA — or an average balance of 45,850 × the daily UMA over twelve months, about MXN 5.38m or roughly US$298,000
  • Or: four consecutive years of temporary residence, which bypasses the financial test entirely
  • Or: family ties to a Mexican citizen, or enough points under the (rarely used) points system
How long it lasts
Indefinite — no renewals.
Path to permanent residence
This is the permanent status. Naturalisation is possible after five years of legal residence.
Cost
Consular fee plus a one-time INM issuance fee of roughly MXN 6,000.
Processing time
Comparable to temporary residence; the in-country step is the slow part.
Worth knowing
  • Same construction as the temporary route: the bar is a UMA multiple re-based every February, so the peso figure rises annually and the dollar equivalent moves twice over. Any fixed number you read, including the ones above, is a snapshot.
  • The direct financial route is expensive enough that most people take the four-year temporary path instead — the same destination without the income test.
  • Permanent residents cannot own a foreign-plated car in Mexico, which catches out people who drove down on temporary status.
  • Retirees with a qualifying pension are assessed on income, not assets, which is why the pensionado profile fits this route better than the savings route.

Temporary residence with work permission

People with a job offer from a Mexican employer registered with INM.

What you need
  • Job offer from an employer holding a Constancia de Empleador with INM
  • The employer files the offer; you then collect the visa at a consulate abroad
  • Qualifications recognised for the role, apostilled and translated where regulated
How long it lasts
Typically 1 year, renewable, tied to the employer.
Path to permanent residence
Counts toward the four-year clock to permanent residence.
Cost
Employer-side INM fees plus your consular and card fees.
Processing time
Several weeks for the employer petition, then the consular step.
Worth knowing
  • Work permission is an attribute of the residence card, not a separate document — but adding it after the fact requires an amendment, so get it right at issuance.
  • Regulated professions require cédula profesional recognition, which is slow and separate from immigration.
FamilyMedium confidenceVerified July 2026

Family unit (vínculo familiar)

Spouses, concubines and children of Mexican citizens or residents.

What you need
  • Marriage or birth certificate, apostilled and translated by a certified translator
  • The Mexican sponsor's identity documents
  • For spouses of Mexican citizens, no income test applies
How long it lasts
Spouses of Mexican citizens get temporary residence for 2 years, then may apply for permanent residence.
Path to permanent residence
The fastest route Mexico offers: two years of family-based temporary residence converts to permanent, versus four years on the economic route.
Cost
Consular and INM fees only — no financial threshold.
Processing time
Several weeks either at a consulate abroad or, unusually, from inside Mexico at INM.
Worth knowing
  • This is one of the few Mexican routes that can be filed from inside the country, which makes it far more practical than the economic routes.
  • Apostille and certified translation are where these applications stall; a translation done outside Mexico by a non-certified translator is commonly rejected.
