Before you start
- Employment or residence permit, issued
- Passport
- Proof of a Windhoek address
- Employer's letter confirming employment and salary
- A Namibian phone number
Step-by-step

Wait for the permit before attempting the bank
Namibian banks want the issued permit, not an acknowledgement of application. Since employment permits commonly take two to three months, agree with your employer how the first months' salary will be handled.

Choose a bank your employer already uses
In a market this size, the corporate relationship smooths individual account opening and salary crediting considerably. Ask the finance team before comparing fee schedules.

Bring an employer's letter on letterhead
Confirming employment, salary and your permit position. A contract alone frequently sends people away for a second visit.

Understand the exchange control position
Namibia sits inside the Common Monetary Area, which means transactions with South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini are treated differently from transactions with the rest of the world. Moving money outside the CMA involves exchange control formalities. Ask the bank what applies to your situation rather than assuming it is like the EU.

Keep rand for South African trips
Rand spends freely in Namibia at one-for-one. Namibian dollars do not spend in South Africa. If you are driving or flying south, change or keep rand before you go — this is a small thing that is genuinely annoying at a fuel station outside Upington.

Register with NamRA and the Social Security Commission
Your employer handles PAYE and social security registration, but confirm both are done. Social security contributions are 0.9% of basic salary from each side with a low monthly cap, which makes them a small but compulsory line.

Things most newcomers don’t know
Rand works here; Namibian dollars do not work there. The peg is symmetric and the acceptance is not.
Under the Common Monetary Area, the Namibian dollar is pegged at par to the rand and South African rand is legal tender in Namibia — you can pay for anything with it. The reverse does not hold: Namibian dollars are not legal tender in South Africa and most South African businesses will simply refuse them. Since a great many people here drive or fly south regularly, ending a trip with a wallet of unusable Namibian notes is a recurring and entirely avoidable irritation.

The Common Monetary Area is an exchange-control boundary, not just a currency arrangement.
Transactions between Namibia, South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini are treated as within the area and are administratively simple; moving money outside it engages exchange control formalities administered through the banks. Anyone planning to save or invest offshore, or to send money to a country outside the CMA regularly, should establish what applies before setting up the habit rather than after a transfer is queried.

Social security here is compulsory, small and capped — and the cap is the interesting part.
Namibia's Social Security Commission requires 0.9% of basic salary from the employee and 0.9% from the employer, but on a capped wage, which puts the maximum monthly contribution from each side at a very low figure. The contribution ceiling was raised with effect from March 2025. The practical consequence is that Namibian social security is one of the lightest payroll obligations in the region — and correspondingly, one of the thinnest safety nets.

The two-to-three month permit wait is the real banking problem, and employers here expect the conversation.
Banks want an issued permit, and employment permits take months because the Immigration Selection Board sits periodically. That leaves a genuine gap between starting work and being able to receive salary locally. Namibian employers of foreign staff deal with this routinely — paying abroad, holding salary, or arranging an advance — but only if you raise it. Agree the arrangement in writing before you arrive.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting to open an account on a pending permit.
- Carrying Namibian dollars into South Africa and finding them refused.
- Assuming money can move outside the Common Monetary Area as freely as within it.
- Arriving with no agreement about how the first months' salary is paid.
- Letting the bank hold an expired permit on file after a renewal.
