Nationals of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and most of western Europe — among more than thirty countries — lost visa-exempt entry to Namibia from 1 April 2025. They now apply online in advance or obtain a visa on arrival, with a published fee for non-African nationalities. The change was made on reciprocity grounds and was approved by cabinet in July 2024. Any guidance saying 'visa-free for 90 days' for those passports is out of date, and turning up on the old assumption is a border problem, not an inconvenience.

Namibia's Immigration Control Act 7 of 1993 requires an employment permit issued by the Chief of Immigration on the Immigration Selection Board's recommendation. Two to three months is a normal processing time and longer is common, because the Board meets in sittings rather than continuously. Employers here start applications long before a candidate resigns anywhere else. If a recruiter tells you it takes a fortnight, they are wrong.

The employer has to show the post was advertised locally and that no suitably qualified Namibian was available. In a country of roughly three million people with a small formal economy, that means foreign hiring concentrates in genuinely scarce roles: mining and geology, specialist medicine, engineering, conservation and the development sector. A generic commercial role is very hard to get a permit for regardless of how good you are.

Namibia's digital nomad visa is administered through the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board and requires gross monthly income of at least USD 2,000 for the main applicant, USD 1,000 for an accompanying spouse and USD 500 per child. The fee is NAD 3,300 on approval. What matters most is the shape: six months, expressly non-renewable, and you may only reapply twelve months after the previous visa expires. It is a long visit rather than a move, and it confers no residence status.

Namibia is part of the Common Monetary Area: the Namibian dollar is pegged one-to-one with the rand and rand circulates freely in Namibian shops. The reverse is not true — a Namibian dollar note is not accepted in Johannesburg. People arriving from or travelling to South Africa routinely get caught holding Namibian notes they cannot spend. Change them before you cross, or keep rand for the trip.

Income from a Namibian source, or deemed to be from one, is taxable here; income from elsewhere generally is not. For 2026/27 the first NAD 100,000 of taxable income is not taxed, and the top marginal rate of 37% applies above NAD 1,550,000. That combination — source basis plus a genuine tax-free threshold — makes the after-tax position for a professional here better than the headline top rate suggests, and it is materially different from South Africa's worldwide-income system next door.
