Step-by-step

Establish whether you are a BIDA or NGO Affairs Bureau file
BIDA for private business. The NGO Affairs Bureau for NGOs and INGOs, which is the more common route here given the Barind water, agriculture and rural development programmes. There is no EPZ in Rajshahi — the nearest is Ishwardi EPZ in Pabna — so BEPZA is unlikely to be the answer. Ask your employer's HR to state it in writing before anything is lodged; a file in the wrong system is restarted rather than redirected.

Have the sponsor obtain the visa recommendation first
For the private sector, the local sponsor applies online to BIDA for an E-visa recommendation in your favour, and only then do you apply for the visa at a Bangladeshi mission. For NGO appointments, the Bureau's approval of the appointment comes first. Arriving on a tourist or business visa intending to convert does not work.

Lodge the work permit through BIDA's One Stop Service portal
The work permit application runs through bidaquickserv.org. BIDA publishes service times in working days — around sixteen for a new commercial-office permit — and the permit is ordinarily granted for an initial year.

Apply for the security clearance within the permit's stated period
Mandatory for all foreign investors and employees, applied for through the same OSS portal since 1 October 2025. If no objection is raised within 21 working days the clearance is deemed granted — but BIDA also states that failing to apply within the timeframe specified on the work permit invalidates the permit. Diarise the date on the permit itself.

Use the Divisional Passport and Visa Office in Rajshahi for extension
DIP runs seven divisional offices and describes them as issuing passports to Bangladeshi nationals in their jurisdiction and visas to foreign nationals. Rajshahi is one. From this far northwest, being able to do renewals locally rather than travelling to Agargaon in Dhaka is worth a phone call to confirm which categories the office handles.

Be careful about the Indian border
Rajshahi sits on the Padma opposite India, and the border and its land ports are close. Crossing points are open only to specific nationalities and visa types and only at designated ports named on the visa, and an Indian visa endorsed for a different port is not usable here. If you plan to cross rather than fly, confirm the designated port before you travel, not at the barrier.

Start the tax clearance certificate six to eight weeks before you leave for good
A person not domiciled in Bangladesh may not leave without a tax clearance certificate from the income tax authority. For a permanent departure that means filing a return covering 1 July to your departure date, at your own Rajshahi tax circle. It requires your presence and cannot be done from Dhaka on the way out.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Rajshahi's foreign workforce is academic and NGO, and that changes which timetable applies to you.

The city's economy is education, agriculture, silk and public administration rather than export manufacturing, so most foreign professionals here arrive on an NGO Affairs Bureau appointment tied to an approved project, or through a university, rather than on a BIDA commercial permit. The Bureau's process is slower and less predictable than BIDA's published sixteen working days. Reading a corporate-oriented guide and expecting BIDA's timeline is the standard planning error for a Rajshahi posting.

Having a divisional visa office here is worth more than it would be in Dhaka's orbit.

DIP's seven divisional offices — Dhaka, Chattogram, Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet, Rangpur and Barishal — issue visas to foreign nationals as well as passports to citizens. Rajshahi is around 250 kilometres from the capital, so having one locally is the difference between a morning's errand and a two-day trip, every renewal cycle. It is also a useful contrast with Gazipur, a much larger city that has none because it sits inside Dhaka division.

Being close to India does not make the border usable.

Rajshahi sits on the Padma facing India and there are land ports within reach, but Bangladeshi and Indian visas are endorsed for specific designated crossing points, and a visa naming a different port will not get you through. Newcomers see the map, assume a short hop into West Bengal is straightforward, and discover otherwise at the barrier. Check the designated port on your visa before planning any overland trip.

Bangladesh has no digital nomad visa, no freelance permit and no retirement route.

The categories are E for employment, PI for private investors, N for NGO appointments, S for students, and family dependants. There is nothing for a remote worker with no Bangladeshi sponsor, nothing for a self-employed consultant without a company here, and nothing for a retiree on external income. Immigration is entirely national, so a quieter, cheaper city offers no softer answer.

Assuming an EPZ route exists here — the nearest is Ishwardi, in another district.
Arriving on a tourist or business visa intending to convert to employment.
Missing the security clearance application deadline printed on the work permit.
Planning an overland trip to India without checking the designated port on your visa.
Planning a permanent departure without allowing weeks for the tax clearance certificate.
