Before you start
- Apostilled criminal-record certificate covering recent residence
- Health cover valid in Ecuador for the visa period
- Documentary proof of the income, pension or investment for your category, apostilled and translated
- For the professional route, a degree registered with SENESCYT
Step-by-step

Choose the category against the current SBU
Pensioner and rentista routes need three SBU of permanent income, USD 1,446 a month in 2026; the investor route needs 100 SBU, USD 48,200; the professional route needs a SENESCYT-registered degree and means of subsistence around one SBU. The SBU is reset every December and every threshold moves with it on 1 January.

Get everything apostilled and translated before you arrive
Police certificates, degrees, pension letters, marriage and birth certificates all need an apostille from the issuing country and a sworn translation into Spanish. From Machala, fixing a missing document means posting internationally or travelling — do it at home, where it costs an afternoon.

Plan the Guayaquil trips into the timeline
There are no foreign consulates in Machala. Guayaquil is roughly three hours north by road and holds the consular corps and the fuller ministry presence. Budget two or three planned trips rather than treating each as a surprise, and note that intercity bus fares rose 25% on 1 August 2026.

File at an Ecuadorian consulate abroad if you can
Filing before you travel means arriving with the visa in hand and reduces the Machala end to a registration and a cédula appointment. From a provincial city with no consular presence that convenience is worth considerably more than it is from Quito or Guayaquil.

Register the visa and obtain the cédula at the Registro Civil
The visa is not the end. You register it and then obtain the cédula de identidad, which is what banks, the IESS, Aguas Machala, Movilidad Machala, the SRI and every municipal counter actually use. Book a separate appointment for it.

Log every border crossing, including short ones
Temporary residents may be absent no more than 90 days a year, cumulative over the visa's validity. Living an hour from Huaquillas means casual trips into Peru are easy and each one is recorded. Keep a spreadsheet of every entry and exit from day one and get an exit and entry stamp every time rather than relying on memory.

Things most newcomers don’t know
A land border an hour away turns the absence limit from a travel rule into a lifestyle rule.
Ninety days out of Ecuador a year, counted cumulatively, is easy to respect when leaving means a flight. It is much harder when Peru is a short drive and a weekend in Tumbes or Máncora is an ordinary thing to do. Each crossing is stamped and each day counts. Residents of Quito or Cuenca never have to think about this; here it is the single most likely way to lose status by accident, and it is entirely avoidable with a spreadsheet.

There is no consular presence here, and that is the real cost of a provincial city.
Every published account of moving to Ecuador is written from Quito or Cuenca, where the ministry and a full consular corps are close. In Machala there is neither. A document that needs your own country's mission means Guayaquil and a day gone, and consular appointment availability rather than Ecuadorian processing becomes the binding constraint. Budget the trips, or file at an Ecuadorian consulate before you ever arrive.

Every threshold is a multiple of the basic salary, which is reset every December.
Ecuador expresses its income and investment thresholds as multiples of the salario básico unificado — one SBU for basic subsistence, three for the pensioner and rentista routes, one hundred for the investor route. The SBU is USD 482 for 2026. Plan against the multiple rather than a dollar figure you read last year, because they all move together on 1 January.

The October 2025 reform makes most published guidance stale.
A reforming law published on 24 October 2025 amended more than twenty-five articles of the mobility law, tightening the loss of permanent residence, requiring judicial-record certificates at entry and for residence visas, and broadening deportation grounds. Almost everything written about Ecuadorian immigration before that date describes a slightly different system. Where a source does not say when it was checked, assume it predates the reform.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating short trips into Peru as too minor to count against the 90-day absence limit.
- Budgeting the process from a Quito- or Cuenca-based guide and omitting the Guayaquil travel.
- Arriving without apostilled police, education and pension documents.
- Relying on guidance written before the October 2025 reform of the mobility law.
- Treating the visa as the end of the process and never obtaining the cédula.
