Before you start
- A job offer advertised in the EU/EEA for at least ten days, normally via Platsbanken
- Employer-provided health, life, employment and occupational pension insurance
- Terms of employment matching the applicable collective agreement
- A Gothenburg address before you can complete registration

Employer advertises and offers
The vacancy must be advertised in Sweden and the EU/EEA for at least ten days before an offer can support a permit. The employer then makes a written offer on Migrationsverket's form and the relevant union gives an opinion on the terms. In Gothenburg that union is very often IF Metall or Unionen, both of which are used to the process.

Ask whether the employer is a certified operator
Migrationsverket runs a certified-operator route through which applications from participating employers and their agents are handled materially faster. The large Gothenburg employers — the vehicle manufacturers, the engineering consultancies and the university — generally use it; a small firm hiring its first foreign engineer generally does not, and the difference in waiting time is months rather than weeks.

Apply to Migrationsverket online
You apply, not the employer, using the offer reference. The fee is SEK 2,200 for the applicant with separate fees for family. Check the salary against the current floor on the day you apply rather than the day you signed the contract.

Give biometrics and collect the residence permit card
For a permit longer than three months you attend a Swedish mission abroad to give fingerprints and a photo. The card is what you travel on; the decision letter alone is not.

Register your move with Skatteverket
Go to a Skatteverket service office with your passport, permit card and evidence of your address. If you intend to live in Sweden for at least a year you are entered in the population register and assigned a personnummer. If not, you get a samordningsnummer instead, which is a much weaker instrument.

Order the personbevis and start the bank
Skatteverket issues the personbevis certificate that banks, employers and landlords ask for. With it and your passport you can open an account and then get BankID, which is the real unlock.

Documents you’ll need

- Written offer of employment and the union's opinion
- Proof of your Gothenburg address for registration
- Marriage or birth certificates for family members, often needing apostille and translation
Things most newcomers don’t know
The registration test is your stated intent to stay a year, not the time you have already spent here.
Skatteverket enters you in the population register if you intend to live in Sweden for at least twelve months, and that is what triggers the personnummer. Someone arriving on a nine-month contract gets a samordningsnummer, which many banks, insurers, gyms and healthcare services handle poorly or refuse outright. If your situation genuinely is long-term, say so and document it — the difference between the two numbers shapes your entire first year.

The salary floor changed on 1 June 2026 and the number is indexed, not fixed.
The old 'maintenance requirement of a good living' was replaced by a hard threshold of 90% of the Swedish median salary — SEK 34,470 a month at the point the rules took effect — recalculated from Statistics Sweden's published median. A defined exemption list covering several IT and engineering roles, care assistants, agriculture, welders and staff of early-stage tech and life-science firms is assessed at 75% instead. Quote the mechanism, check the current figure.

Gothenburg's hiring is concentrated in exactly the occupations the lower 75% floor was written around.
The exemption list reaches several engineering and IT occupations and staff of early-stage technology and life-science companies — which describes a large share of what actually recruits internationally here, between the vehicle-software cluster at Lindholmen, the AstraZeneca site at Mölndal and the Chalmers spin-outs. It is worth checking your occupation against the list rather than assuming the headline 90% figure applies to you.

Sweden has no digital nomad visa, and no amount of remote income substitutes for one.
There is no Swedish residence route based on working remotely for a foreign employer. The alternatives are a sponsored work permit, the self-employment permit — which Migrationsverket audits against your business plan at extension and frequently refuses — or study. Guides describing Sweden as nomad-friendly are describing the lifestyle, not the law.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the salary that qualified last year still qualifies — the floor is indexed and moved on 1 June 2026.
- Accepting a samordningsnummer without realising how much it locks you out of.
- Not asking whether the employer uses the certified-operator route, which is often the difference between weeks and months.
- Changing employer within the first two years without a new permit application.
- Planning to move on remote income, for which Sweden has no route at all.
