Before you start
- Personnummer and folkbokföring
- A tax card (A-skattsedel) — automatic once registered
- BankID, for the return and Skatteverket's e-services
- For expert relief, an application to Forskarskattenämnden within three months of starting work
Step-by-step
- 1
Check the rate of the municipality you are about to move into
Municipal income tax is levied where you are registered as living, not where you work. Göteborg is 32.60% for 2026. Partille is 31.36% and Mölndal 31.99%, both inside the daily commute. Over a career the difference between them is substantial and it is decided by which side of a municipal boundary your flat sits on.

Let the employer withhold and check the tax card
PAYE withholding is automatic once you have a personnummer. Check that the employer has the right tax table; a wrong table produces a large reconciliation later rather than an error now.

Apply for expert tax relief within three months if you may qualify
Foreign key personnel can have 25% of salary exempted from Swedish income tax and employer contributions for up to seven years. The simple alternative qualification is recurring monthly income above 1.5 times the price base amount — SEK 88,801 a month for 2026. The application must reach Forskarskattenämnden within three months of your first working day and there is no extension.

Confirm the pre-filled return each spring
Skatteverket sends a complete declaration in March covering salary, interest, dividends and property. If nothing needs changing you approve it with BankID and it is done. Filing closes in early May.

Declare foreign income and assets
Swedish tax residents are taxed on worldwide income. Foreign accounts, property and investments must be declared, and Sweden receives automatic information exchange from most countries. Add these to the pre-filled return rather than assuming they are covered.

Understand capital and property taxation separately
Capital income is taxed at a flat rate distinct from earned income, investment savings accounts (ISK) are taxed on a notional yield rather than on realised gains, and there is a capped municipal property fee rather than a full property tax. These rules are unusual and worth understanding before you invest or buy.

Things most newcomers don’t know
Gothenburg costs you more tax than Stockholm on the same salary, and almost no relocation package mentions it.
For 2026 Göteborg's combined municipal and regional rate is 32.60% against Stockholm's 30.55% — over two percentage points, levied on your whole taxable income before any national surcharge. Gothenburg's much lower rents usually more than absorb it, but the comparison people actually make is gross salary against gross salary, which flatters a Stockholm offer twice over. Do the net arithmetic against the real rent.

Your municipality of registration, not your employer, sets most of your rate — and the boundary is a tram ride away.
Partille is 31.36% and Mölndal 31.99% for 2026, both of them ordinary Gothenburg commuter municipalities with tram or commuter rail into the centre. Two colleagues on identical salaries at the same Gothenburg office can take home noticeably different amounts because one registered on the city side of the line. It is worth checking the rate before choosing where to rent, and it is not a factor most newcomers know exists.

Expert tax relief is worth a great deal and is lost on a three-month procedural deadline.
Twenty-five per cent of salary exempt from income tax and from employer social contributions, for up to seven years, is a substantial sum on the kind of salary that qualifies — and the automotive and pharmaceutical employers here recruit exactly that profile. The alternative test is purely mechanical: recurring monthly income above 1.5 times the price base amount, SEK 88,801 for 2026. What is not obvious is that the application must reach Forskarskattenämnden within three months of your first working day, and the deadline cannot be extended. Raise it during onboarding, not at your first tax return.

The pre-filled return is genuine — most people really do file in under a minute.
Skatteverket receives salary, interest, dividends and property data directly and sends you a completed declaration. If it is correct you approve it with BankID in the app and that is the whole process. People from countries where filing is an ordeal spend weeks preparing for something that needs no preparation. What does need attention is anything the agency cannot see: foreign income, foreign accounts and property abroad.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing a Gothenburg offer with a Stockholm one on gross salary, ignoring two points of municipal tax and a very different rent.
- Missing the three-month deadline for expert tax relief and losing up to seven years of it.
- Assuming your tax rate follows your employer rather than your registered address.
- Not declaring foreign accounts and property, which Sweden already receives data about.
- Ignoring the March declaration because you assume PAYE has settled everything.
