The dos and don’ts that help you fit in fast — and avoid the mistakes newcomers make in their first weeks.

What to know before you go

Register with Boplats Väst on your first day, even if you are not sure you are staying

Critical

Gothenburg's regulated first-hand rental stock is allocated strictly on accumulated queue time through Boplats Väst. At the end of 2025 the register held 307,593 people, it mediated 6,853 apartments that year, and the average queue time of the people who actually got a contract was 2,493 days — a shade under seven years. That is materially better than Stockholm and still far too long to be a housing plan. Registration costs a nominal annual fee and is free if you are 18 to 21 from 1 January 2026. Queue days accumulate whether or not you are looking, so the cost of registering early is close to zero and the cost of not doing it is years.

You will be renting second-hand, and the permission letter is the whole question

Critical

Because the queue is measured in years, nearly every newcomer rents andrahand — a sublet from a first-hand tenant or from a bostadsrätt owner. That is legal and normal, but only with the landlord's or the co-op board's written permission. Without it the arrangement is unlawful, the person subletting to you risks losing their own contract, and you can be put out at short notice through no fault of your own. Ask to see the permission document before you transfer a deposit. A landlord who cannot produce one is the single biggest red flag in this market.

The personnummer chain is the real first-month project

Critical

Skatteverket assigns a personnummer when it enters you in the population register, and the test is whether you intend to stay at least a year. Under that you get a samordningsnummer, which many banks, insurers, gyms and healthcare services handle badly or refuse. From the personnummer you get a personbevis, from that a bank account, and from the bank account BankID — which is what actually unlocks 1177, Skatteverket's e-services, rental applications, parcel lockers and Swish. Nobody warns arrivals how much of ordinary life stops working until that chain is complete.

Gothenburg's municipal tax is over two points higher than Stockholm's, and the suburbs differ again

Important

Municipal income tax is levied where you are registered as living, not where you work. Göteborg's total municipal and regional rate for 2026 is 32.60%, against Stockholm's 30.55% — so an identical salary is worth noticeably less here. Inside the commuter belt it moves again: Mölndal is 31.99% and Partille 31.36%, both a short tram or train ride from the centre. Nobody mentions this when you are choosing a flat, and over a career it is real money.

A non-EEA driving licence is valid for one year, and then you start from zero

Important

Sweden recognises a valid foreign licence for one year from the date you are entered in the population register — not from arrival. Exchange without testing exists only for licences from the EEA, Switzerland and Japan. American, Canadian, Australian, Indian and British licence holders must pass the Swedish theory and practical tests like a beginner, and the whole chain — learner permit, eyesight certificate, two compulsory risk courses, lessons, tests — realistically takes months. Start in month two, not month eleven.

It rains here, and that is the actual climate difference from Stockholm

Good to know

Gothenburg's 1991–2020 normal is about 917 mm of precipitation a year, against 400 to 600 mm across eastern Svealand where Stockholm sits. The Atlantic side of Sweden is milder in winter — proper deep freezes are rarer than in Stockholm — and considerably wetter and greyer for it. Buy the waterproof shell and the actual boots before your first October rather than after, and treat a bike with mudguards as standard equipment.
