Employer sponsorship is simple but ties your residency to one job. A free-zone licence with a visa allocation lets you sponsor yourself and your dependants and survives losing a client. That choice shapes everything downstream, including your corporate tax position — so price both before you accept an offer.

Sponsor secures the work permit and entry permit
A mainland employer applies through MoHRE and the federal ICP. A free-zone company applies through its own zone's establishment-card channel. Note that the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs states entry visas are valid for 60 days from the date they are issued — do not let one sit unused.

Activate the permit, usually without leaving the country
If you are already inside the UAE on a visit or other status, an in-country change of status is filed and you never board a plane. Confirm this before booking anything — the old visa-run assumption is out of date for most applicants.

Take the medical fitness test
Mandatory for residents aged 18 and over: a blood screen and a chest X-ray for tuberculosis at an approved centre in the emirate. An active communicable disease can mean refusal. Results generally return within a day or two.

Give Emirates ID biometrics and collect the digital permit
Fingerprints, a facial scan and an official photograph at an ICP-approved centre; the file cannot complete without them. The residence permit is then issued electronically. Note the Emirates ID number as soon as it exists — banks and telecom operators can often start on the number before the card is printed.

Things most newcomers don’t know

The widely repeated 'sixty days from entry to finish residency' has no citation on the federal portal.

u.ae's general provisions for the residence visa, its Emirates ID page and its visa FAQ state no such period. What is officially stated is that entry visas are valid for 60 days from their issuance date. There is an overstay fine regime and the fines land on the applicant rather than the sponsor, so the practical advice holds — track every stage and chase early — but ask ICP for the deadline on your own file rather than trusting a figure no government page publishes.

A self-sponsored permit survives losing a client. An employer-sponsored one does not survive losing a job.

Employer sponsorship ties your residency, your family's residency and your bank account to a single employment relationship, with only a grace period if it ends. A free-zone company you own keeps sponsoring you as long as you renew the licence. People compare only the upfront cost and miss that they are also buying independence from one company's HR decisions — which matters more in a small emirate where the number of alternative employers is genuinely limited.

Creative City and the Fujairah Free Zone are not interchangeable.

The Fujairah Free Zone wraps around the port and is built for trade, logistics and industry. Creative City licenses media, consultancy and freelance activity and is the one aimed at individuals. Applying to the wrong one for your activity means a rejected activity list or a licence that does not permit what you actually do — and the fix is a new application, not an amendment.

Fujairah is ICP. It is not GDRFA and it is not TAMM.

Dubai runs its own immigration directorate and Abu Dhabi its own service portal; neither serves this emirate. A Fujairah resident following a Dubai guide ends up on a system that will not accept their file, and following an Abu Dhabi one ends up on TAMM, which has no jurisdiction here either. Confirm the channel names ICP before you begin.

Common mistakes to avoid

Following Dubai's GDRFA or Abu Dhabi's TAMM instructions in Fujairah, where neither applies.
Choosing employer sponsorship without pricing the self-sponsored free-zone alternative.
Picking the wrong free zone for your activity and having to start the application again.
Letting an issued entry permit sit unused — the UAE states entry visas are valid 60 days from issuance.
Shipping belongings or signing a lease before the medical fitness test has come back clear.
