Fujairah is the only emirate located completely on the UAE's eastern coast, along the Gulf of Oman — the country's only access to the Indian Ocean. The Hajar range separates it from Dubai and Sharjah, so the drive to Dubai is 1.5 to 2 hours through or around mountains rather than a run down a motorway. Everything follows from that geography: the weather, the port, the rainfall, the pace. Do not move here imagining a cheap Dubai suburb; treat it as a different place that happens to share a country.

The UAE government's own description of Fujairah notes that it borders Sharjah to the south as well as to the west. That is because Khor Fakkan, Kalba and Dibba Al-Hisn are Sharjah territory sitting on this same Gulf of Oman coast, and Dibba itself is divided between Fujairah, Sharjah and Oman. It matters practically: Sharjah prohibits alcohol outright and runs its own tenancy law and municipality fee, so driving twenty minutes up the coast road can put you under an entirely different legal regime without a sign telling you. Know which emirate you are in before you assume the rules travel with you.

Tenancy contracts register with Fujairah Municipality, not with Dubai's Ejari, Abu Dhabi's Tawtheeq or RAK Municipality. Electricity and water come from Etihad Water and Electricity, the federal utility for the northern emirates, not from DEWA, ADDC or SEWA. Residency runs through the federal ICP, not Dubai's GDRFA and not Abu Dhabi's TAMM. Health insurance is the federal MoHRE basic scheme that took effect on 1 January 2025 — the one that expressly excludes Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Almost every UAE guide online is really a Dubai guide.

u.ae states plainly that because of its easterly location, Fujairah's climate is more moderate than that of Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The emirate's own portal adds that rainfall is higher than the rest of the UAE, partly because of the mountains encircling it and partly because the prevailing easterlies bring water-laden clouds off the warm Indian Ocean, and that December to March daytime temperatures average around 25 °C and rarely exceed 30 °C. Summer is still a Gulf summer. But the winter here is a genuinely different proposition, and it is why the rest of the country drives over at weekends.

The Port of Fujairah sits roughly 70 nautical miles from the Strait of Hormuz — and crucially, outside it — which is why it exists at all. Fujairah is one of the world's three largest bunkering hubs, oil storage has grown from 550,000 cubic metres in 1994 to almost 18 million, and ADNOC's 360 km crude pipeline from Habshan has been pumping here since 2012 with a capacity of 1.8 million barrels a day. If you are in shipping, oil trading, marine services, logistics or industrial engineering, this is a serious place to work. If you are not, the job market is small and you should have an offer before you arrive.

The mountains that give Fujairah its rain also give it flash floods, and the rain arrives hardest in exactly the months that make the emirate pleasant. Wadi beds fill fast and from rain that fell somewhere you cannot see. Do not camp in a wadi bed, do not drive into moving water, and check the forecast before a mountain trip in winter. Mobile coverage in the interior is patchy, so tell someone your route.
