Banking🇦🇪 Fujairah, UAE

Opening a bank account, personal and corporate

A personal current account needs an Emirates ID, a passport with the residence permit, a salary certificate or employment letter, and proof of address. UAE banks are Central Bank licensed and operate across all seven emirates, so living in Fujairah does not restrict which bank you use — only how close the nearest branch is, and the branch network on the east coast is thin. Ask specifically for a salary-transfer account: it normally waives the minimum balance of roughly AED 3,000–5,000 that otherwise carries a monthly fall-below fee. The genuine difficulty here is corporate: opening a business account for a new free-zone company is a slow, documentation-heavy compliance exercise, and banks routinely decline small free-zone entities with no local substance.

Total cost
Personal accounts are normally free to open, with a minimum balance requirement of roughly AED 3,000–5,000 unless salary is transferred. Corporate accounts commonly carry higher minimum balances and monthly fees.
Time needed
Personal: same day to a few working days. Corporate: commonly several weeks, and sometimes several attempts across different banks.
Validity
Accounts do not expire, but banks require refreshed Emirates ID and residence documents at each renewal and will restrict an account whose documents have lapsed. Corporate accounts are re-reviewed when the trade licence renews.

Medium confidence·Residents with an issued Emirates ID, and — the harder case here — owners of newly formed free-zone companies who need a corporate account before they can trade.

Before you start

  • An issued Emirates ID and a valid residence permit
  • Passport with the residence entry
  • A salary certificate or employment letter for a personal account
  • For a corporate account: the trade licence, memorandum, shareholder documents, a business plan and evidence of expected activity

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Open the personal account first

It is the straightforward one and everything else needs it. Emirates ID, passport, salary certificate or employment letter and proof of address. Many banks will begin onboarding on the Emirates ID number before the physical card arrives.

  2. 2

Ask for salary transfer to waive the minimum balance

A minimum balance of roughly AED 3,000–5,000 with a monthly fee below it is the standard retail product. Routing your salary to the account usually removes it, and it is a five-minute conversation at opening and a much harder one afterwards.

  3. 3

Check the branch situation before you choose the bank

Fujairah has branches, but far fewer than the west coast, and branchless digital banks have no counters anywhere. If you will need cheque books, stamped letters or a human to unpick a problem — and as a new resident you will — weight the branch over the app.

  4. 4

For a corporate account, prepare far more than you expect

Banks want the licence and corporate documents, but also a credible business plan, expected turnover, named suppliers and customers, and often evidence of a real office rather than a flexi-desk. Small free-zone companies with no local footprint are declined regularly. Approach more than one bank in parallel.

  5. 5

Take a cheque book and treat it carefully

Rent and many commercial obligations are settled by post-dated cheque. A cheque returned for insufficient funds stopped being a criminal offence when Federal Decree-Law 14 of 2020 came into force in January 2022, but the payee can now take the cheque straight to the execution court as an enforceable instrument.

Documents you’ll need

  • Emirates ID and valid residence permit
  • Passport
  • Salary certificate or employment letter for a personal account
  • Trade licence, memorandum and shareholder documents for a corporate account
  • Registered tenancy contract or an Etihad WE bill as proof of address

Things most newcomers don’t know

The licence is easy; the bank account is the bottleneck.

People choose a cheap free-zone licence and assume the company is then operational. Banks apply their own anti-money-laundering assessment and routinely decline small free-zone entities that cannot demonstrate real activity — no office, no counterparties, no plausible turnover. Budget several weeks, prepare a genuine business plan, and apply to more than one bank at once.

A bounced cheque is no longer a crime, and the exposure got faster rather than smaller.

Federal Decree-Law 14 of 2020, in force from January 2022, removed criminal liability for a cheque returned for insufficient funds — and in the same reform made the cheque directly enforceable through the execution court. Your landlord can move to enforcement against your assets without first winning a civil trial. Since annual rent here is paid in post-dated cheques, keep every one funded on its date.

Your bank is federal even though your utility, your tenancy and your health scheme are not.

UAE banks are Central Bank licensed and operate nationwide, so Fujairah constrains nothing about which bank you use. Your tenancy registers with Fujairah Municipality, your utility account is with Etihad Water and Electricity, and your insurance is the federal MoHRE scheme. Newcomers often get this backwards and assume they must bank locally while trying to use Dubai's rental systems.

Pick the bank for its Fujairah branch, not its app rating.

Zero-balance digital accounts are excellent value and have no counter anywhere in the country. On the east coast, where the alternative branch may be an hour away over the mountains, having somewhere to physically walk into is worth more than a slicker interface the first time something goes wrong with your salary.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Forming a free-zone company and assuming a corporate bank account follows automatically. It frequently does not.
  • Applying to only one bank for a corporate account and losing weeks to a single refusal.
  • Choosing a branchless digital bank and then needing a physical cheque book for your first tenancy.
  • Writing post-dated cheques without keeping every dated cheque funded.
  • Letting the bank's copy of your residence permit or trade licence expire, which restricts the account.
