Work visas, residence — and the remote-work rule that replaced a nomad visa
The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) is the main employer-sponsored route, and it got materially easier on 10 March 2025 when the median-wage requirement was scrapped and the experience requirement dropped from three years to two. Residence runs through the points-based Skilled Migrant Category, which changes again on 24 August 2026. There is no digital nomad visa — because since 27 January 2025 an ordinary visitor visa lets you work remotely for an overseas employer without limit.

What to know before you go
Get your IRD number before your first payday
CriticalWithout an IRD number and a completed IR330 tax code declaration, your employer must tax you at the no-notification rate of 45% — far above any real bracket. You get it back eventually, but the first few pay cycles hurt. Apply the week you arrive; it is free and mostly online.
Publicly funded healthcare needs a work visa of two years or more
CriticalEligibility for public health services turns on holding a work visa valid for at least two years, counted from your first day in New Zealand. A 12-month visa means you pay for your own GP visits and hospital care. Check your visa length against this before you assume you're covered — it catches people on shorter first contracts.
ACC covers everyone — and takes away your right to sue
CriticalNew Zealand's accident scheme covers every person injured here, including tourists, regardless of visa or residency. The trade is constitutional: you generally cannot sue anyone for personal injury. Coming from a country where litigation is the remedy, this is the single biggest structural difference in how risk works here.
You can now work remotely on a visitor visa
ImportantSince 27 January 2025, visitor visas and NZeTAs carry a condition permitting remote work for an overseas employer, with no cap on how much. You still cannot work for a New Zealand employer or serve New Zealand clients, and the work must stay incidental to the purpose of your trip — but there is no separate digital nomad visa because this quietly replaced the need for one.
Rent is quoted weekly, not monthly
ImportantEvery listing, lease and conversation uses a weekly figure. A '$650 place' is $650 a week — roughly $2,820 a month. Multiplying by four rather than 4.33 is the standard newcomer budgeting error, and it understates your annual rent by about a month.
Learn to pronounce Māori place names properly
Good to knowVowels are consistent: a as in 'car', e as in 'egg', i as 'ee', o as in 'four', u as 'oo'. 'Wh' is an f sound, so Whangarei is 'fong-ah-RAY'. Making a genuine attempt is noticed and appreciated; confidently mangling names you use daily is not.

Nature · 40 minutes by ferry from downtown
Vineyards, olive groves and swimming beaches, close enough that people commute from it.
Local tip: Go on a weekday. Take the ferry to Matiatia and walk the coastal track to Oneroa rather than paying for a wine tour — the views are the point and they're free.
Karangahape Road
Nightlife · City fringe
Auckland's most characterful strip — bars, live music, vintage shops and the queer scene, on a ridge above the motorway.
Local tip: 'K Road' to everyone. The good places are up the stairs and down the alleys, not on the street frontage. Start at St Kevins Arcade.
Maungawhau / Mount Eden
Landmark · Central suburbs
A volcanic cone in the middle of the city with a deep crater and a 360-degree view over both harbours.
Local tip: One of about 53 volcanoes in the Auckland field, all of which could erupt again. Walk up at dawn; the summit road is closed to vehicles to protect the crater.

Nature · West coast, 45 minutes by car
Black iron-sand surf beach under Lion Rock, backed by the Waitākere rainforest.
Local tip: Genuinely dangerous water — swim between the flags or not at all. Check whether the Waitākere tracks are open first; many are closed to protect kauri trees from dieback.

Restored villas turned into the city's best-known restaurant and bar strip.
Local tip: Ponsonby Central is the reliable move for a group with different tastes. Prices reflect the postcode — Sandringham's Indian food is better value and better food.

A freshwater lake behind an enormous black sand dune, reached on foot across a stream.
Local tip: Almost no visitors get past Bethells to the lake. Walk the dune, swim in the lake, and you'll likely have it to yourself on a weekday.
