Before you start
- Cédula de identidad
- Your foreign licence and, where required, an official translation
- Medical and psychosensometric assessment at an authorised centre
- Proof of an Ambato address for the vehicle registration

Check with the ANT whether your licence can be converted at all
Ecuador converts licences from some countries and requires the full course and examination from others, and the position has changed over time. Confirm with the national agency rather than with a driving school, which has an interest in the answer.

Complete the medical and psychosensometric assessment
An authorised centre tests sight, hearing, reaction time and coordination. It is required for issue and for renewal and is a standard part of the process rather than an obstacle.

Pay the matrícula and the Tungurahua provincial tax at a bank, 48 hours ahead
The municipality asks that the registration fee and the provincial government's vehicle tax be settled at authorised banks at least two days before your appointment, so the payments have cleared in the system when you arrive. This is the step people miss, and missing it means being turned away and rebooking.

Book the appointment and pay the rest at the municipal windows on the day
The municipal rodaje, the technical inspection fee and the plate sticker are paid at the GAD's own counters on the day of the trámite. Appointments are booked through the municipality's online services portal. The inspection itself is carried out at the Centro de Revisión Técnica Vehicular in the Shuyurco sector.

Keep the certificate — the registration depends on it
The revisión técnica is an annual obligation checking mechanical condition, safety and emissions, and its certificate is issued by the same municipal unit. Without a current one you cannot renew the matrícula, and the two are handled together here rather than by separate bodies.

Budget intercity travel from the current fares
The ANT's Resolution 020-DIR-2026-ANT, adopted on 25 July 2026 and in force from 1 August, raised interprovincial and intraprovincial bus fares by 25% — the first adjustment since 2021, driven by diesel costs and expressly a bridge until a new methodology is finished. Ambato sits on the sierra's main road spine with constant buses to Quito, Cuenca, Riobamba and Baños, so this is a direct and recurring cost here. The half fare for seniors, children and people with disabilities survives it.

Things most newcomers don’t know
Ambato is the exception among Ecuador's larger cities: no municipal transit company, and a provincial tax on top.
Guayaquil has its ATM, Cuenca its EMOV EP, Manta and Machala their own mobility companies. Ambato runs vehicle registration through a unit inside the municipality itself and adds a Gobierno Provincial de Tungurahua vehicle tax that the others do not have. So the number of counters, the number of payments and the order they must happen in are all different here from anywhere else in the country — which is exactly why a national guide is useless for this and the municipality's own notice is the only thing worth reading.

The 48-hour rule is the single most common reason people are turned away.
The municipality publishes it plainly: the matrícula and the provincial tax must be paid at authorised banks at least 48 hours in advance, because the system needs the payments reconciled before the appointment. The municipal rodaje, inspection fee and sticker are then paid on the day at the GAD's windows. Someone who pays everything on the morning arrives with money spent and nothing registered. Read the sequence once and it is straightforward; assume it works like a one-stop shop and it does not.

Bus fares across the country rose 25% on 1 August 2026, and Ambato is a bus city.
The ANT approved Resolution 020-DIR-2026-ANT on 25 July 2026, applying a 25% tariff adjustment factor to interprovincial and intraprovincial fares from 1 August, replacing rates unchanged since 2021. Ambato sits at the crossroads of the sierra — Quito north, Riobamba and Cuenca south, Baños and the Amazon east — and intercity buses are how everyone moves. Every fare table published before August 2026 now understates the cost, and the increase is expressly temporary pending a definitive methodology.

The road down to Baños and Puyo is the most useful and the most demanding drive you will do here.
It is an hour east to Baños and then a spectacular descent past waterfalls towards the Amazon — the reason living in Ambato is better placed for a weekend than living in Quito. It is also a mountain road with heavy trucks, weather that changes fast and a landslide history, and it drops several thousand metres. Naturally aspirated engines lose power at 2,600 metres and brakes work hard on the descent; engine braking rather than riding the pedal is not a formality on this road.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Turning up for the vehicle appointment without having cleared the bank payments 48 hours earlier.
- Assuming Ambato has a municipal transit company like Guayaquil or Cuenca and looking for the wrong office.
- Forgetting the Tungurahua provincial vehicle tax, which no other city in this set charges.
- Budgeting intercity bus travel from a fare table published before 1 August 2026.
- Riding the brakes on the descent to Baños instead of using engine braking.
