Worth knowing

The DKK 552,000 figure is the 2026 amount. It is regulated every 1 January and has risen sharply in recent years (DKK 514,000 in 2025), so an offer negotiated a year ahead can fall below the bar by the time you apply.
The salary must actually be paid into a Danish account in your name — paying it offshore, or partly in allowances, is a common reason permits are refused or not renewed.
There is a Supplementary Pay Limit Scheme at a lower threshold (DKK 446,000 for 2026), but it is conditional: seasonally adjusted gross unemployment must not have averaged above 3.75% in the three months before you apply, and it is open only to nationals of a defined list of countries. Treat it as a route that can close, not a permanent second tier.
The permit is tied to the specific employer and job. Changing role or company means a new application before you start.
Denmark's EU opt-out means there is no Danish EU Blue Card. A Blue Card issued by another member state does not give you the right to work here.

Worth knowing

Both lists are revised twice a year, on 1 January and 1 July, from Regional Labour Market Council data. The 1 July 2026 revision left the higher-education list at 164 job titles — slightly down — and the skilled-work list at 63, slightly up. An occupation on the list today may be off it in six months, so check the list on the day you apply rather than the day you accepted the offer.
The Positive List for Skilled Work carries a separate minimum-salary condition and a requirement that your foreign vocational qualification be recognised. It is materially harder to use than the higher-education list.
Being on the list does not lower the standard of proof on 'Danish pay and conditions' — SIRI still checks the salary against sector norms.

How long it lasts: Follows the track used — typically up to 4 years on the pay limit track. The short-term track allows repeated stays of up to 90 days at a time within a 12-month period.
Path to permanent residence: Yes, through the underlying permit; the fast-track procedure itself does not change the permanent-residence clock.
Cost: The same SIRI fee as the underlying scheme; certification costs the employer, not you.
Processing time: The point of the scheme: you may start work as soon as SIRI confirms receipt of a complete application and your biometrics are recorded, rather than waiting for the decision.

Worth knowing

Ask whether a prospective employer is fast-track certified before you negotiate a start date. On an uncertified employer you are waiting weeks or months; on a certified one you can often be at your desk within days.
If the application is later refused, work done in the meantime does not become lawful retrospectively — the start-work right is provisional.
Certification lapses if the company falls below the staffing or compliance conditions, and the scheme then stops applying to new hires.

A business that is innovative and scalable — restaurants, shops, import/export and consultancy are explicitly outside scope
Sufficient funds to support yourself for the first year of the permit

The team size is capped, so a large founding group cannot all come through this route

How long it lasts: Up to 2 years initially, extendable by 3 years at a time if the business is trading and you can still support yourself.
Path to permanent residence: Possible, but the standard Danish permanent-residence conditions — including the employment history test — are hard to satisfy from self-employment alone.
Cost: SIRI case-processing fee; the expert-panel assessment itself carries no separate charge.
Processing time: The panel assessment runs on set application rounds, then SIRI's own processing. Budget several months end to end.

Worth knowing

The panel rejects the large majority of applications. It is assessing innovation, not viability — a profitable but ordinary business fails.
Denmark has no digital nomad visa and no self-employment route for freelancers. If your plan is to work remotely for foreign clients from Copenhagen, none of the Danish routes fits, and Start-up Denmark is not a workaround for it.
You cannot take salaried employment on the side; the permit is for running the business.

Researcher and guest researcher permit

Academics and industrial researchers with a Danish research post or hosting agreement. Denmark treats research separately from ordinary employment and there is no salary floor on the immigration side.

Processing time: Usually 1–2 months; considerably faster through the Fast-track Scheme's researcher track at a certified institution.

Worth knowing

This is the immigration permit. Separately, the Danish tax scheme for researchers and key employees (forskerskatteordningen) taxes gross salary at a flat 27% plus the 8% labour-market contribution — an effective 32.84% — for up to 84 months. Approval for one does not give you the other; the tax scheme is applied for through your employer to Skattestyrelsen.
The tax scheme's salary floor for key employees fell to an average DKK 65,400 per month from 1 January 2026, down from DKK 78,000 — a deliberate loosening, and the single most commonly quoted stale number in Danish relocation advice. The lower floor applies to employment agreements entered into from 1 January 2026, so an existing contract signed under the old rules is judged against the old figure. Approved researchers qualify on their research credentials rather than on salary.
The tax scheme also requires that you have not been liable to Danish tax in the previous 10 years, so a second Danish posting can disqualify you.

Residence permit for higher education studies

Non-EU students admitted to a Danish higher education programme. A realistic first step into Denmark, though a weaker bridge into work than in Sweden or Finland.

What you need

Admission to an accredited Danish higher education programme
Proof of tuition payment where fees apply — non-EU/EEA students generally pay full fees
Documented funds to support yourself for the period the study permit covers
The programme taught in Danish, English, Swedish, Norwegian or German

How long it lasts: The length of the programme, with limited extensions.
Path to permanent residence: Only indirectly. Study time counts toward the permanent-residence clock only in limited circumstances, and you must switch to a work permit after graduating.
Cost: SIRI case-processing fee, plus tuition, which is substantial for non-EU students.
Processing time: Usually 1–2 months, but apply as early as admission allows.

Worth knowing

Work rights alongside study are capped by hours, and exceeding them jeopardises the permit.
Denmark offers a post-study job-search permit, but its length has been repeatedly changed by policy. Confirm the current period with SIRI rather than relying on an older guide.
Nordic citizens do not need any of this — under the Nordic Convention a Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian or Swedish citizen may live, study and work in Denmark without a permit and simply registers in the CPR system.
