E Visa and BIDA work permit

A local sponsoring entity — a Bangladeshi company, or a registered branch or liaison office of a foreign one
An E-visa recommendation letter obtained by that sponsor from BIDA before the visa is applied for

Security clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs, applied for through the same OSS portal
Evidence that the role could not readily be filled locally, plus the employment contract and the employee's qualifications

How long it lasts: Work permits are ordinarily granted for an initial year and renewed annually. The employment visa itself is extended in Bangladesh by the Department of Immigration & Passports, and extensions of up to three years are available for the E category.
Path to permanent residence: There is no ordinary employment-to-permanent-residence ladder. Bangladesh does provide for permanent residence and for citizenship by investment under separate policy instruments, but these are not what a salaried employee accumulates toward. Assume annual renewal indefinitely.
Cost: BIDA publishes work permit fees on its OSS service list — figures in the region of BDT 10,000 per year with a larger one-off charge on a new commercial-office permit are commonly quoted, but the schedule changes and BIDA's own service list is the only figure to plan on. Visa fees are separate and set by nationality.
Processing time: BIDA advertises service times measured in working days for the permit itself — around sixteen working days for a new commercial-office work permit. The security clearance runs alongside and is the longer pole: it is deemed granted if no objection is raised within 21 working days.

Worth knowing

The 21-working-day deemed-clearance rule cuts both ways. It is a real protection against an indefinite silence, but BIDA also states that failing to apply for security clearance within the period specified on the work permit invalidates the permit. The clock is on you, not on the ministry.
The sponsor must obtain the E-visa recommendation from BIDA before you apply for the visa. Arriving on a business or tourist visa intending to convert is the standard failure mode and it does not work.
Bangladesh has no digital nomad visa and no freelance or self-employment residence permit. If you have no Bangladeshi sponsor, there is no category for you.
Employment is tied to the sponsoring employer and the approved position. Changing jobs means a new work permit and a new visa recommendation.
Do not plan to leave without a tax clearance certificate. A person not domiciled in Bangladesh may not leave the country without one from the income tax authority, and for a permanent departure that means filing a return covering 1 July to the date of departure. This is administered at the local tax circle and it is not fast.
Tax residence in Bangladesh is 182 days, not 183, and there is a second limb: 90 days in the income year if you were present for more than 365 days across the four preceding years. The income year runs 1 July to 30 June, not the calendar year. Every part of that differs from the assumption most arrivals bring with them.

Processing time: Slower and less predictable than the BIDA route. The Bureau's approval and the Home Affairs security clearance are sequential in practice, and the sector's experience is that this can run to several weeks or considerably longer.

Worth knowing

This is a genuinely separate track from BIDA, and the distinction is the single most useful thing to know before you start. An NGO employee's file does not go to BIDA and a BIDA-issued work permit does not cover NGO employment. Organisations that have hired both ways know this; individuals arriving from a private-sector background frequently do not, and a misdirected file is restarted rather than redirected.
The post is tied to an approved project. When the project approval lapses, the basis for the visa lapses with it — which is why NGO contracts in Bangladesh so often track project cycles rather than calendar years.
Security clearance in this sector involves both the Special Branch and NSI and is not a rubber stamp. Build it into the start date rather than assuming a fixed onboarding week.
The regulatory posture toward foreign-funded NGOs in Bangladesh has been politically sensitive at various points. Treat the approval timetable as genuinely uncertain rather than merely slow.

Worth knowing

Which zone your enterprise sits in changes the regulator. BIDA covers the general economy; BEPZA covers the export processing zones and BEZA the economic zones. A garments venture inside an EPZ is not a BIDA file.
Evidence of inward remittance matters. Bangladesh operates meaningful exchange controls and the ability to repatriate profits and capital later rests on having documented the money coming in properly at the start. This is the point at which that documentation is either created or lost.
The PI visa does not by itself permit you to draw a salary as an employee of another company. Employment is the E route.

Worth knowing

The institution must be government-approved. Admission to something that is not is not a basis for an S visa, and this catches people who applied to a private provider on reputation alone.
A student visa does not permit employment.
Graduating confers nothing. If you intend to stay, start the employer conversation a year out, not in your final semester.

Dependant and family visa

Spouses and dependent children of foreign nationals holding an E, N or PI visa, and foreign spouses of Bangladeshi citizens.

What you need

Marriage certificate or proof of the family relationship
The principal's visa, work permit and employer or Bureau documentation, or the Bangladeshi spouse's national ID
Valid passports

How long it lasts: Granted in step with the principal's status and extended alongside it.
Path to permanent residence: Marriage to a Bangladeshi citizen opens a citizenship route under the Citizenship Act, and Bangladesh also recognises a No Visa Required endorsement for people of Bangladeshi origin and their spouses, which is worth checking before applying for anything else.
Cost: Published by DIP and the mission processing the application.
Processing time: Follows the principal's file; lodging together is faster than lodging afterwards.

Worth knowing

People of Bangladeshi origin holding a foreign passport, and their spouses and children, can often obtain a No Visa Required endorsement in the foreign passport rather than a visa at all. Anyone with a Bangladeshi parent should check this first — it is the closest thing Bangladesh has to a settled status and it is widely unclaimed.
A dependant visa carries no right to work. A spouse who wants employment needs their own E visa and work permit, sponsored by their own employer.
The dependant's status is derivative. If the principal's work permit lapses, so does the family's basis for being here.
