Confirm which regulator covers your employer
BIDA for private business. The NGO Affairs Bureau for NGOs and INGOs. BEPZA for export processing zone enterprises. Ask your employer's HR to state it explicitly before anything is lodged. A file in the wrong system is restarted, not redirected, and this single question is the difference between a smooth arrival and losing a quarter.

Have the sponsor obtain the visa recommendation first
For the private sector, the local sponsor applies online to BIDA for an E-visa recommendation in your favour. Only then do you apply for the visa at a Bangladeshi mission. Arriving on a tourist or business visa intending to convert is the standard failure mode and it does not work.

Lodge the work permit through BIDA's One Stop Service portal
The work permit application runs through bidaquickserv.org. BIDA publishes service times measured in working days — around sixteen for a new commercial-office permit — and the permit is ordinarily granted for an initial year.

Apply for the security clearance within the permit's stated period
Mandatory for all foreign investors and employees, applied for through the same OSS portal since 1 October 2025. If no objection is raised within 21 working days the clearance is deemed granted. But failing to apply within the time specified on the work permit invalidates the permit — so the deadline runs against you.

Extend the visa at the Department of Immigration & Passports in Agargaon
In-country extension is handled by DIP at Agargaon. Extensions of up to three years are available in the E and N categories, tied to the underlying work permit or Bureau approval.

Start the tax clearance certificate six to eight weeks before you leave for good
A person not domiciled in Bangladesh may not leave without a tax clearance certificate from the income tax authority. For a permanent departure that means filing a return covering 1 July to your departure date. It is obtained at your local tax circle and it cannot be done from abroad.

Things most newcomers don’t know

BIDA and the NGO Affairs Bureau are separate tracks, and a misdirected file is restarted rather than transferred.

Private-sector employment permission comes from BIDA on an E visa; NGO and INGO appointments come from the NGO Affairs Bureau on an N visa, tied to an approved project and with its own appointment certificate. They have different documents, different approvals and different timetables. Organisations that have hired both ways know this; individuals coming from a corporate background routinely do not, and the discovery arrives after weeks of a file sitting in the wrong queue. Ask which regulator owns your employer before a single form is filled in.

The 21-working-day deemed clearance protects you — but the deadline to apply runs against you.

Since 1 October 2025 security clearance for work permits has been applied for digitally through BIDA's One Stop Service portal, and if no objection is raised within 21 working days the clearance is deemed granted. That is a genuine improvement on an open-ended wait. The half people miss is BIDA's own statement that failure to submit the application within the timeframe specified on the work permit invalidates the permit. Read the date on the permit itself and diarise it — nobody will chase you.

The tax clearance certificate is an exit condition, not a formality, and it cannot be done remotely.

Bangladeshi law provides that a person not domiciled in Bangladesh shall not leave without obtaining a tax clearance certificate from the income tax authority. For a permanent departure this means an exit return covering 1 July to your departure date, filed at your local tax circle, with estimated income up to departure included. People plan their last month around handovers and farewells and then discover a bureaucratic process that takes weeks and requires their physical presence. Start it six to eight weeks out.

Bangladesh has no digital nomad visa, no freelance permit and no retirement route.

The categories are E for employment, PI for private investors, N for NGO appointments, S for students, and family dependants. There is nothing for a remote worker with no Bangladeshi sponsor, nothing for a self-employed consultant serving Bangladeshi clients without a company, and nothing for a retiree with external income. Guides that suggest otherwise are describing aspiration. If you have no sponsor here, there is no route, and that is worth knowing before you plan a move around one.

Common mistakes to avoid

Letting a file go to BIDA when the employer is regulated by the NGO Affairs Bureau, or the reverse.
Arriving on a tourist or business visa intending to convert to employment.
Missing the security clearance application deadline printed on the work permit.
Planning a permanent departure without allowing weeks for the tax clearance certificate.
Assuming a nomad or freelance route exists — none does.
