An employment contract on the model form required by the Ministry of Employment, visaed by that ministry before you start work
An ANAPEC attestation — the national employment agency certifying that no suitable Moroccan candidate was found, unless your role falls into an exempt category
A long-stay (type D) visa from a Moroccan consulate, for nationalities that need one
Proof of address in Morocco: a legalised lease, a utility bill in your name, or an attestation d'hébergement
A medical certificate less than three months old
A criminal-record extract from your country of origin for a first application, and a Moroccan one at renewal

How long it lasts: The carte d'immatriculation is normally issued for one year on a first application and renewed annually; longer validity (up to ten years) is possible at renewal once you have a settled history.

Cost: The card itself is nominal — a fixed fee of a few hundred dirhams including the timbre. The real cost is document production: legalisation, sworn translation into Arabic or French, and the criminal-record extract, plus the consular visa fee.
Processing time: The ANAPEC attestation is the long pole and can run to a couple of months. Contract visa, consular visa and then the residence card each add weeks; budget three to six months from offer to card in hand.

Worth knowing

You must apply for the card within a short window of arrival — the requirement bites as soon as you intend to stay beyond ninety days, and the police treat the fifteen-day registration expectation seriously. Do not wait until day eighty-nine.
The contract-visa process moved onto the ministry's TAECHIR platform, so an employer describing a paper process may be working from an out-of-date playbook. Ask them to confirm which channel they are using.
Your card is tied to that employer and that job. Changing employer means a fresh contract visa, not a notification.
Morocco has no digital-nomad visa. Remote workers paid from abroad have no route of their own and generally rely on the ninety-day visa-free stay plus one extension — which builds nothing, can be refused, and is not a residence permit.
Casablanca Finance City is a company status, not an immigration route. It does not make you resident; it changes how a qualifying company and its staff are taxed once you already are.

Carte de séjour for independent professional or commercial activity

People setting up their own business in Morocco — a company, a professional practice, a riad, a consultancy — and wanting a residence card that reflects that rather than an employer's.

What you need

A registered Moroccan entity or professional registration: statutes, the certificat négatif for the company name, registration at the Registre du Commerce and a tax identifier
Evidence that the activity is real and funded — bank statements, invoices, premises
Proof of address, medical certificate and criminal-record extract, as for every mention of the card
Foreign capital brought in should be declared to the Office des Changes at the time of investment, which is what preserves your right to take proceeds back out later

How long it lasts: One year initially, renewed annually; longer validity is possible once the business has a track record.
Path to permanent residence: Same four-year threshold for the ten-year carte de résidence, on the same discretionary basis.
Cost: Company formation costs plus the card fee. Accountancy is a recurring and non-optional cost — Moroccan companies file monthly and quarterly.
Processing time: Company registration is comparatively quick — days to a few weeks through a Centre Régional d'Investissement. The residence card follows the same timetable as any other mention.

Worth knowing

Declaring foreign investment to the Office des Changes at the time you bring the money in is the single step that makes later repatriation of dividends or sale proceeds possible. Money that arrives undeclared is very hard to send back out.
There is no minimum-investment residence programme in Morocco. Buying property does not entitle you to residence, whatever a property listing implies.
Auto-entrepreneur status exists in Morocco but is generally restricted to Moroccan nationals and residents already holding a card; do not plan on it as a way in.

Retirees and people living on income from outside Morocco who are not going to work here. This is the vehicle a large European retiree population actually uses.

What you need

Proof of stable resources from outside Morocco — pension statements, investment income, bank statements over several months
A commitment not to undertake paid activity in Morocco, which is what the « visiteur » mention means
Proof of address: a legalised lease or property deed, or an attestation d'hébergement
Medical certificate and criminal-record extract, as for every mention
Private health insurance in practice, since you will not be inside the CNSS/AMO system without Moroccan employment

How long it lasts: One year initially, renewed annually, with longer validity possible later.
Path to permanent residence: The ten-year carte de résidence after four years of continuous regular residence, discretionary.
Cost: The card fee plus document production. Private medical cover is the substantial recurring cost.
Processing time: Weeks to a few months at the prefecture, driven mostly by how complete your file is on the first visit.

Worth knowing

Morocco has no dedicated retirement visa. This is the ordinary registration card with a visitor mention, and there is no published income threshold — the prefecture assesses whether your resources are sufficient and durable. Bring more evidence than you think you need.
There is a real and much-misdescribed tax benefit: article 76 of the Code Général des Impôts grants an 80% reduction of the income tax due on a foreign-source retirement pension — but only on the portion permanently transferred into a NON-convertible dirham account. Non-convertible means the money cannot be sent back out. Retirees who bank in convertible dirhams to keep their optionality do not get the reduction; retirees who take the reduction have committed the money to Morocco. That trade-off is the whole point and relocation blogs routinely omit it.
Living in Morocco for more than 183 days in any 365-day period, or having your permanent home or centre of economic interests here, makes you a Moroccan tax resident on worldwide income. Double-taxation treaties then allocate the pension — check yours rather than assuming.

Worth knowing

Renewal depends on continued enrolment. A dropped or failed year can put the card at risk, and the card lapses with the enrolment.
Working while studying is not automatic — paid work needs its own authorisation and the student mention does not confer it.

Family route — spouse or parent of a Moroccan national

Spouses of Moroccan nationals, and foreign parents of Moroccan children.

What you need

A marriage certificate recognised in Morocco — a foreign marriage generally needs transcription through a Moroccan consulate or the courts before the administration will act on it
The Moroccan spouse's CIN and, usually, their presence at the prefecture
Proof of shared address
Medical certificate and criminal-record extract

How long it lasts: Issued as a carte d'immatriculation initially, typically one year and renewed.
Path to permanent residence: This is the route where the ten-year carte de résidence is genuinely reachable, and it is stronger than 'more likely to be granted'. Article 17 of loi 02-03 lists categories entitled to it DE PLEIN DROIT — as of right rather than at the prefecture's discretion — and that list includes the foreign spouse of a Moroccan national, the foreign parent of a Moroccan child, and the spouse and minor children of an existing residence-card holder. The four-year continuous-residence route under article 16 is the discretionary general path; article 17 is a different and better mechanism. Ask under which article your file is being considered.
Cost: Card fee plus the cost of legalising and transcribing the marriage documents, which is usually the larger number.
Processing time: Highly variable. The document chain — legalisation, translation, transcription — takes far longer than the card itself.

Worth knowing

Transcription of a foreign marriage is the step that stalls these files. Start it before you need the card, not after.
Marriage does not by itself confer the right to work; the mention on your card determines that, and a spouse card usually permits it, but confirm rather than assume.

Casablanca Finance City — status for qualifying companies and their staff

People being hired by, or relocating a regional office into, a company that holds Casablanca Finance City status: regional headquarters, financial firms, and professional-services providers serving markets outside Morocco.

What you need

The company — not you — must obtain CFC status from Casablanca Finance City Authority, on the basis of an activity oriented toward markets outside Morocco
Your own immigration position is the ordinary employer-sponsored route: ANAPEC attestation or exemption, contract visa, long-stay visa, carte de séjour

How long it lasts: Immigration validity is the ordinary carte de séjour cycle. The tax election for employees runs for a maximum of ten years.
Path to permanent residence: No difference from the ordinary work route — CFC status changes tax treatment, not immigration status.
Cost: Borne by the company. CFC membership carries its own fees.
Processing time: The company's status application is a separate, months-long process run before any hiring.

Worth knowing

This is not a visa and it is regularly described as one. CFC status attaches to the company; it gives you no independent right to enter or reside in Morocco.
The employee benefit is an option to be taxed on Moroccan-source employment income at a flat rate — 20% — instead of the progressive scale, for a maximum of ten years. The 2026 Finance Law, in force from 1 January 2026, confirmed the 20% figure and made the ten years non-consecutive: you can leave a CFC employer, work elsewhere or abroad, and return to another CFC company without forfeiting the unused years. Time worked outside CFC-status companies does not count against the ten. Anything you read quoting 15%, an unlimited duration, or a single continuous ten-year block is out of date.
The flat rate is an option, not an imposition, and it is not always the better deal. An employee can ask the employer to apply the ordinary progressive scale instead, but the election has to be made before 1 February of the year concerned. At lower salaries the ordinary scale can beat 20%, so run the comparison rather than defaulting.
It is narrow by design. The exemption and preferential rates are conditioned on serving markets outside Morocco, and a company doing domestic business does not qualify.
Exchange control still applies to you personally. CFC status does not make your dirhams convertible.
