Moving from Oman to Pakistan

What your passport gets you at the border — and what it takes to actually stay.

OmanPakistanShort stay
Visa-free · 90 days

Oman passport holders can enter Pakistan without a visa and stay up to 90 days.

This is short-stay visitor policy only. It does not let you work, study or settle in Pakistan — that needs a residence permit.

Work Visa

Foreign nationals taking up employment with a company registered in Pakistan, including staff of multinationals, contractors on approved projects, and employees of enterprises registered with the Board of Investment.

What you need
  • A job offer and contract with a company incorporated or registered in Pakistan
  • A sponsor letter from the employer on company letterhead, with incorporation documents and tax registration
  • Recommendation from the Board of Investment where the employer is a registered foreign investment enterprise
  • Passport valid well beyond the intended stay
  • Security clearance, which is required for extension rather than only for first issue
How long it lasts
The entry visa is issued for up to three months. Once in Pakistan it is extended, and DGI&P publishes extensions of up to two years at a time for the work category. There is no cap on how many times it may be renewed.
Path to permanent residence
None. Pakistan has no residence-to-settlement route: years spent on a work visa do not accumulate toward permanent residence, and naturalisation under the Citizenship Act is discretionary and rarely used by ordinary foreign employees. Plan on renewing indefinitely, or on the POC if you qualify by descent.
Cost
Visa fees are set by nationality and reciprocity and are published on the NADRA online visa system; they are modest relative to the professional cost of assembling the employer's documentation. The employer normally bears the cost.
Processing time
The e-visa is processed online through visa.nadra.gov.pk. DGI&P publishes indicative turnarounds of days to a couple of weeks for the initial issue; extensions are slower because they depend on a security clearance that runs on its own timetable.
Worth knowing
  • The security clearance sits on the extension, not just the entry visa. People plan around the first grant being quick and are then caught by an extension that stalls while clearance is outstanding — start it well before expiry rather than in the final fortnight.
  • Pakistan has no digital nomad visa and no freelance or self-employment residence permit. Remote workers with no Pakistani employer have no route designed for them; the business visa covers visits, not residence, and using it to live and work here is a breach.
  • The visa is tied to the sponsoring employer. Changing jobs means a fresh application rather than an amendment, so do not resign before the new employer's sponsorship is in hand.
  • Extensions are applied for through the online portal, but the file is worked by the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports and, in practice, by its regional and provincial offices. A Karachi file and a Lahore file are not handled by the same office and do not move at the same speed.
  • Pakistan's Form-C is given TO you: the immigration officer issues it on arrival and it is the document that underpins your registration, so keep it rather than reconstructing it later. Do not confuse it with India's FRRO Form C, which is a report filed BY your host or hotel about you — the names collide and the obligations run in opposite directions. Separately, registration with the police Special Branch and a residential permit applies specifically to nationals of India and Somalia and to anyone immigration directs; most foreign nationals are exempt from that step entirely.
  • Movement restrictions are real. Foreign nationals may move freely across most of the country, but a No Objection Certificate from the Ministry of Interior is still required for designated restricted and prohibited areas — parts of the Baltoro and other high-altitude zones, areas near the Afghan and Indian frontiers, and specified border districts. This is a planning fact for anyone whose work involves field travel, not a comment on the country as a place to live.

Pakistan Origin Card (POC)

Foreign nationals of Pakistani descent who are not Pakistani citizens — people who renounced citizenship, foreign-born descendants of Pakistanis, and foreign spouses of Pakistani citizens. For a large share of anyone actually relocating to Pakistan, this rather than a visa is the correct answer.

What you need
  • Proof of Pakistani origin — a former Pakistani passport or CNIC, or documentary descent from a Pakistani citizen
  • For foreign spouses of Pakistani citizens, the marriage certificate and the spouse's CNIC
  • A valid foreign passport
  • Application through NADRA, either online or at a Pakistani mission or NADRA centre abroad
How long it lasts
NADRA issues the POC for a fixed term — seven years is the standard card, with different terms for the foreign-spouse category — and it is renewable. What it confers is indefinite stay in Pakistan rather than a fixed permitted period.
Path to permanent residence
The POC is itself the durable status. It is not a route to citizenship — it does not make you a Pakistani national, does not entitle you to a Pakistani passport, and carries no voting rights. NICOP is the document for citizens; POC is the document for non-citizens of Pakistani origin, and the two are not interchangeable.
Cost
Fees are set by NADRA and vary by category and by the mission processing the application. Check the current schedule with NADRA or the Pakistani mission rather than relying on a figure from an agent.
Processing time
NADRA publishes normal and urgent tiers. Applications lodged abroad through a mission take longer than those lodged in Pakistan.
Worth knowing
  • This is the distinction that costs people months: NICOP is for Pakistani citizens living abroad and lets the holder apply for a Pakistani passport and register as a voter. POC is for people of Pakistani origin who are not citizens and does neither. If you renounced Pakistani citizenship to naturalise somewhere that forbids dual nationality, you need POC, not NICOP — and applying for the wrong one is a wasted cycle.
  • NADRA's own statement of POC rights is unusually generous by regional standards: multiple visa-free entry, indefinite stay, exemption from reporting to police or foreigners' registration offices, the right to buy, own and dispose of movable and immovable property anywhere in Pakistan, the right to open and operate bank accounts, and eligibility for employment. That last point matters — a POC holder does not need a work visa to take a job.
  • The exemption from police and FRO reporting is the practical daily difference between holding a POC and holding a visa. It removes the residential-permit machinery entirely.
  • Dual nationality is permitted with a defined list of countries. If your other nationality is not on Pakistan's list, renunciation may have been required and POC is then the route back in. Confirm your own case against the current list rather than assuming.
  • POC does not confer political rights. No vote, no Pakistani passport, and restrictions apply to certain categories of employment and office.

NICOP — National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis

Pakistani citizens living abroad, including dual nationals, who are moving to or spending substantial time in Pakistan. Issued by NADRA under the NADRA Ordinance 2000 as proof of identity and nationality for citizens resident overseas.

What you need
  • Pakistani citizenship, held directly or by descent from a Pakistani parent
  • Documentary proof — a parent's CNIC, a Pakistani birth or family registration certificate, or a previous Pakistani passport
  • A valid foreign passport or proof of foreign residence
  • Application through NADRA's online identity portal or a Pakistani mission
How long it lasts
Issued for a fixed term — commonly seven or ten years depending on the option chosen — and renewable. Underlying citizenship does not expire with the card.
Path to permanent residence
Not applicable in the usual sense: NICOP holders are already Pakistani citizens. The card is documentation of a status you hold, not a grant of one. It supports a Pakistani passport application and voter registration.
Cost
NADRA publishes a fee schedule with normal, urgent and executive tiers, differing by the country of application.
Processing time
Varies sharply by tier and by whether the application is lodged in Pakistan or through a mission abroad.
Worth knowing
  • NICOP gives visa-free entry to Pakistan on a foreign passport, which is why many dual nationals never hold a Pakistani visa at all. Present the NICOP with the foreign passport at immigration.
  • It is not a residence permit and does not need to be — citizenship already carries the right to live and work in Pakistan. The card exists so that a citizen holding a foreign passport can prove that at a counter.
  • Anyone with a Pakistani parent should check eligibility before pursuing a work visa. Citizenship by descent is common, widely unclaimed, and removes the entire visa problem. This is the single most under-used shortcut for people relocating to Pakistan.
  • A NICOP holder is a Pakistani tax subject on the same terms as any other citizen once the residence test is met. The card does not create an exemption, and treating it as though it does is a costly assumption.
  • If you have renounced Pakistani citizenship, NICOP is closed to you. POC is the correct document — see that route.

Business Visa

Founders, consultants, traders and investors coming to Pakistan for commercial purposes — meetings, negotiations, setting up or overseeing a venture — rather than to take up employment with a Pakistani employer.

What you need
  • An invitation from a Pakistani company or chamber of commerce, or documentation of your own business interest in Pakistan
  • Evidence of the business — registration documents, tax registration, and for investors the Board of Investment's involvement
  • A valid passport
How long it lasts
DGI&P publishes the business visa at up to five years with multiple entries for nationals on the Business Friendly List, with a defined permitted stay per entry. Regional Passport Offices in Islamabad and the provincial capitals are empowered to grant a one-year extension on production of business documents.
Path to permanent residence
None. This is a commercial-visit category, not a residence route, and time on it accumulates toward nothing.
Cost
Fees vary by nationality and validity and are published on the NADRA online visa system.
Processing time
DGI&P advertises rapid processing — as little as 24 hours — for nationals of the countries on its Business Friendly List. Other nationalities go through the standard e-visa timeline.
Worth knowing
  • A five-year visa is not five years of residence. The validity of the visa and the permitted stay per entry are different numbers, and reading the first as the second is the most common and most expensive mistake made with this category.
  • This is the route people reach for when they want a nomad or freelance visa that does not exist. Pakistan has neither. If you are running a remote business from Karachi or Lahore with no Pakistani employer and no Pakistani commercial presence, there is no category written for you, and the business visa is not a substitute.
  • The extension power sitting with Regional Passport Offices is genuinely useful and under-known: it means an in-country extension is a provincial-capital errand rather than an Islamabad one.
  • There is no investor-residence programme in Pakistan separate from this. The Board of Investment facilitates visas for registered foreign investors and their staff, but facilitation of an existing category is not a distinct residence route, and no published investment threshold buys residence.

Family Visit Visa

Foreign spouses and dependent children of Pakistani citizens and of foreign nationals of Pakistani origin, coming to live with family in Pakistan.

What you need
  • Marriage certificate or proof of the family relationship
  • The sponsoring relative's CNIC, NICOP or POC
  • A valid passport
  • Sponsor's undertaking and proof of address in Pakistan
How long it lasts
DGI&P publishes the family visit category at up to five years' validity with a one-year permitted stay and multiple entries, extendable inside Pakistan on a yearly basis. The category is written for foreigners of Pakistani origin and their foreign spouses.
Path to permanent residence
Marriage to a Pakistani citizen can lead to naturalisation under the Citizenship Act, and this is one of the few realistic naturalisation routes in Pakistan. The process is discretionary and slow; treat it as possible rather than assured.
Cost
Published on the NADRA online visa system; the family category is generally among the cheaper ones and free in some sub-categories.
Processing time
DGI&P publishes an indicative seven to ten days for the family visit category.
Worth knowing
  • For a foreign spouse of a Pakistani citizen, the POC is usually the better long-term answer than repeated family visas — it gives indefinite stay, the right to work, the right to hold property and exemption from police registration. Many spouses run visa renewals for years without applying for it.
  • Indian nationals are handled separately across every Pakistani visa category, including this one, with distinct rules and processing. If that applies to you, none of the general timelines above should be assumed.
  • The sponsor's documentation carries the file. A sponsor whose own CNIC or NICOP is expired will stall the application before it is even assessed.

Study Visa

Foreign students admitted to a Pakistani university or recognised institution, including medical and engineering programmes that draw substantial international intake.

What you need
  • Admission to a recognised Pakistani institution
  • A No Objection Certificate from the relevant federal ministry, obtained via the institution
  • Evidence of funds and of fee payment
  • Security clearance
How long it lasts
DGI&P publishes an entry validity of up to two years for the study category, with extensions granted a year at a time with re-entry, for the duration of the programme.
Path to permanent residence
None. Graduating confers no right to remain and there is no post-study work route. Staying on requires an employer to sponsor a work visa from scratch.
Cost
Published on the NADRA online visa system. Tuition, not the visa, is the substantive cost.
Processing time
Institution-led and gated by the ministry NOC and the security clearance, both of which sit outside the university's control. Start a full term ahead.
Worth knowing
  • The ministry NOC is the real bottleneck, not the visa. Universities differ enormously in how competently they chase it, and a slow institution can cost you a semester.
  • Security clearance applies here as it does to work and missionary categories, and it is not a formality for every nationality.
  • There is no post-study work visa. Anyone treating a Pakistani degree as a foothold should understand that the foothold ends on graduation day unless an employer has already sponsored them.
