Moving from Kiribati to Switzerland

What your passport gets you at the border — and what it takes to actually stay.

KiribatiSwitzerlandShort stay
Visa-free · 90 days

Kiribati passport holders can enter Switzerland without a visa and stay up to 90 days.

This is short-stay visitor policy only. It does not let you work, study or settle in Switzerland — that needs a residence permit.

How you actually move to Switzerland

B permit — employed, third-country national

Managers, specialists and other qualified workers with a Swiss job offer. In practice, senior or scarce roles at employers willing to fight for a quota place.

What you need
  • A Swiss employer that has demonstrated it could not fill the role from Switzerland or the EU/EFTA — the priority rule
  • Qualifications: a degree plus several years of professional experience, or equivalent specialist skills
  • Pay and conditions matching local and sectoral norms — undercutting is a refusal ground
  • An available place in the federal quota for third-country nationals, allocated to the canton
  • Both cantonal and federal (SEM) approval
How long it lasts
1 year initially, then renewed annually while employment continues.
Path to permanent residence
A C permit (permanent residence) after 10 years of residence — reduced to 5 for nationals of the US, Canada and certain other treaty states. Naturalisation requires 10 years plus cantonal and communal conditions.
Cost
Several hundred francs in cantonal fees, usually employer-paid.
Processing time
Two to three months, driven by the two-stage cantonal-then-federal approval.
Worth knowing
  • The annual quota for third-country nationals is small and precisely known: 8,500 places for 2026, split 4,500 B permits and 4,000 L permits nationwide, unchanged from 2025. Applications genuinely get refused for quota exhaustion late in the year, so timing matters in a way it does not elsewhere.
  • UK nationals have their own separate contingent — 2,100 B and 1,400 L permits for 2026 — carved out after free movement ended. A British applicant is not competing against the general third-country pool.
  • The priority rule means your employer must document a failed EU/EFTA search. Small firms often cannot or will not do this.
  • The permit is tied to canton and employer at first; changing either needs authorisation until you have more settled status.
  • Switzerland has no digital nomad or self-employment-for-foreign-clients route. Remote work for an overseas employer is not a basis for residence.

L permit — short-term residence

Assignments and fixed-term contracts under a year, including many intra-company transfers.

What you need
  • The same priority-rule and qualification tests as the B permit
  • A place in the L-permit share of the third-country quota — 4,000 nationwide for 2026, or 1,400 in the separate UK contingent
  • A defined, time-limited purpose
How long it lasts
Up to 12 months, extendable to a maximum of 24 in total.
Path to permanent residence
None directly. Time on an L permit counts toward the 10-year C-permit clock only once you convert to a B permit, and conversion is not guaranteed.
Cost
Comparable cantonal fees.
Processing time
Similar to the B permit.
Worth knowing
  • The L permit is a weaker status than its length suggests — family reunification is restricted and it does not build toward settlement on its own.
  • Employers sometimes offer an L permit because a B quota place was unavailable. Understand which one you are being given before you accept.

Self-employment / establishing a business

Founders and self-employed professionals — but only where Switzerland sees a durable economic interest.

What you need
  • A business plan showing lasting positive effect on the Swiss labour market: local jobs, investment, or a genuinely needed service
  • Sufficient capital and adequate premises
  • Cantonal economic-development approval as well as migration approval
  • A quota place, as with employment
How long it lasts
B permit renewed annually against continued viability.
Path to permanent residence
The same 10-year (or 5-year treaty) route to a C permit.
Cost
Highly variable; the capital and substance requirements dominate.
Processing time
Several months — the economic-interest assessment is substantive.
Worth knowing
  • 'Economic interest' means benefit to Switzerland, not to you. A consultancy serving foreign clients almost never clears it.
  • Cantons differ markedly in appetite and in what they consider a needed activity. Where you apply is a strategic choice.
FamilyMedium confidenceVerified July 2026

Family reunification

Spouses, registered partners and minor children of Swiss citizens and permit holders.

What you need
  • Proof of relationship
  • Suitable accommodation for the family size
  • Financial means without recourse to social assistance
  • Language requirements in some cantons and for some permit categories
How long it lasts
Matched to the sponsor's permit.
Path to permanent residence
Spouses of Swiss citizens can pursue facilitated naturalisation after 5 years of residence and 3 years of marriage; others follow the sponsor's C-permit clock.
Cost
Cantonal fees.
Processing time
Several months, and slower where the sponsor holds an L permit.
Worth knowing
  • Rights differ sharply by the sponsor's status: spouses of Swiss citizens and C-permit holders have a legal entitlement, while L-permit holders' families are at the authority's discretion.
  • Cantonal integration and language conditions are real and vary — this is one of the areas where Switzerland is genuinely federal.
