Worth knowing

The 30-day expedited service is the single most valuable thing in Icelandic immigration and it applies to the employee only. Families arriving on the standard track can be several months behind the earner.
The permit is tied to a specific employer and occupation. Changing jobs means a new work permit application by the new employer.
Iceland has no EU Blue Card and no EU long-term resident status, being outside the EU. Nor is there a startup or investor residence route of the kind Denmark and Finland run.
Non-EEA hiring is genuinely constrained. Icelandic law requires the employer to show the post could not be filled from Iceland or the EEA, and the overall volume of permits is small enough that employers without prior experience of the process often underestimate it.

Worth knowing

This route is discretionary in a way the qualified-professional route is not. Vinnumálastofnun assesses the labour-market position at the time of the application, and a shortage recognised last year does not bind it this year.
The permit is tied to the employer, which creates real dependency. Losing the job generally means losing the basis for the permit.
Iceland's collective agreements set wage floors across almost the whole labour market, and they are enforced. An offer below the tariff will not produce a permit.

Worth knowing

The 180-day cap is not an accident. Icelandic tax residence generally begins at 183 days of presence in a 12-month period, so the visa is built to keep you just under it — but count your days carefully, because earlier trips to Iceland in the same window count too.
You are not a resident, so you do not get a kennitala on the ordinary basis, you are outside Icelandic health insurance, and you cannot open a normal Icelandic bank account or take a residential lease the way a resident can.
The income test is on your income, not your savings. A large bank balance and modest monthly earnings will not qualify.
Iceland has no other remote-work or freelance route. If you need more than 180 days you need an employment-based residence permit with an Icelandic employer.

Worth knowing

The housing condition is real and difficult. Reykjavík's rental market is extremely tight, and an applicant who cannot document adequate housing will not be granted the permit however good their income.
Nordic citizens are outside this system entirely: under the Nordic Convention a Danish, Finnish, Norwegian or Swedish citizen may live and work in Iceland without a permit and simply registers legal domicile with Registers Iceland.
EEA/EFTA nationals register rather than apply, and the registration cannot be refused if the conditions are met.
