Cost: USD 500 per year for the main applicant, and USD 500 per year each for a spouse and every dependant.
Processing time: Applications are handled by the Department of Immigration & Emigration; as a new programme, timelines are not yet well established.

Worth knowing

The minimum income threshold is the one figure not to trust from any secondary source. It was reported at USD 2,000 a month around launch and at USD 1,500 following a reported reduction, and articles also disagree on whether a multi-year option exists. The Department's own material confirms the USD 500 fee and the 12-month renewable validity; confirm the income requirement with them directly before planning around it.
The per-person fee structure is unusually expensive for families — USD 500 applies separately to the main applicant, spouse and each dependant, so a family of four pays USD 2,000 a year.
You may not work for Sri Lankan clients or employers on this visa.
Health insurance is a stated condition, so letting cover lapse becomes a compliance problem at renewal rather than just a personal risk.
Practical upside beyond the right to stay: a residence visa is what lets you open a Sri Lankan bank account, which a tourist visa does not.

Cost: Varies by category; published by the Department. Spouse visas where the marriage has subsisted more than six months are free of charge.
Processing time: Driven largely by how quickly the employer assembles its documentation and secures the line-ministry recommendation.

Worth knowing

The visa is granted for one purpose only. Engaging in any other employment — including unpaid work — or any other trade or business breaches the Immigrants and Emigrants Act.
Changing employer means a new visa application, not an amendment. Plan a job move around that rather than resigning first.
The documentary burden sits with the employer, including a line-ministry recommendation. A smaller Sri Lankan company that has never sponsored a foreigner may not realise what is involved.
Unlike Chile, you enter first and apply from inside the country within the period of stay granted at the port of entry.

Sri Lanka has no freelance or self-employment residence visa for work performed for Sri Lankan clients. That gap is real and is why the nomad visa is restricted to foreign clients.
