Worth knowing

The security clearance sits on the extension, not just the entry visa. People plan around the first grant being quick and are then caught by an extension that stalls while clearance is outstanding — start it well before expiry rather than in the final fortnight.
Pakistan has no digital nomad visa and no freelance or self-employment residence permit. Remote workers with no Pakistani employer have no route designed for them; the business visa covers visits, not residence, and using it to live and work here is a breach.
The visa is tied to the sponsoring employer. Changing jobs means a fresh application rather than an amendment, so do not resign before the new employer's sponsorship is in hand.
Extensions are applied for through the online portal, but the file is worked by the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports and, in practice, by its regional and provincial offices. A Karachi file and a Lahore file are not handled by the same office and do not move at the same speed.
Pakistan's Form-C is given TO you: the immigration officer issues it on arrival and it is the document that underpins your registration, so keep it rather than reconstructing it later. Do not confuse it with India's FRRO Form C, which is a report filed BY your host or hotel about you — the names collide and the obligations run in opposite directions. Separately, registration with the police Special Branch and a residential permit applies specifically to nationals of India and Somalia and to anyone immigration directs; most foreign nationals are exempt from that step entirely.
Movement restrictions are real. Foreign nationals may move freely across most of the country, but a No Objection Certificate from the Ministry of Interior is still required for designated restricted and prohibited areas — parts of the Baltoro and other high-altitude zones, areas near the Afghan and Indian frontiers, and specified border districts. This is a planning fact for anyone whose work involves field travel, not a comment on the country as a place to live.

Worth knowing

This is the distinction that costs people months: NICOP is for Pakistani citizens living abroad and lets the holder apply for a Pakistani passport and register as a voter. POC is for people of Pakistani origin who are not citizens and does neither. If you renounced Pakistani citizenship to naturalise somewhere that forbids dual nationality, you need POC, not NICOP — and applying for the wrong one is a wasted cycle.
NADRA's own statement of POC rights is unusually generous by regional standards: multiple visa-free entry, indefinite stay, exemption from reporting to police or foreigners' registration offices, the right to buy, own and dispose of movable and immovable property anywhere in Pakistan, the right to open and operate bank accounts, and eligibility for employment. That last point matters — a POC holder does not need a work visa to take a job.
The exemption from police and FRO reporting is the practical daily difference between holding a POC and holding a visa. It removes the residential-permit machinery entirely.
Dual nationality is permitted with a defined list of countries. If your other nationality is not on Pakistan's list, renunciation may have been required and POC is then the route back in. Confirm your own case against the current list rather than assuming.
POC does not confer political rights. No vote, no Pakistani passport, and restrictions apply to certain categories of employment and office.

Worth knowing

NICOP gives visa-free entry to Pakistan on a foreign passport, which is why many dual nationals never hold a Pakistani visa at all. Present the NICOP with the foreign passport at immigration.
It is not a residence permit and does not need to be — citizenship already carries the right to live and work in Pakistan. The card exists so that a citizen holding a foreign passport can prove that at a counter.
Anyone with a Pakistani parent should check eligibility before pursuing a work visa. Citizenship by descent is common, widely unclaimed, and removes the entire visa problem. This is the single most under-used shortcut for people relocating to Pakistan.
A NICOP holder is a Pakistani tax subject on the same terms as any other citizen once the residence test is met. The card does not create an exemption, and treating it as though it does is a costly assumption.

Worth knowing

A five-year visa is not five years of residence. The validity of the visa and the permitted stay per entry are different numbers, and reading the first as the second is the most common and most expensive mistake made with this category.
This is the route people reach for when they want a nomad or freelance visa that does not exist. Pakistan has neither. If you are running a remote business from Karachi or Lahore with no Pakistani employer and no Pakistani commercial presence, there is no category written for you, and the business visa is not a substitute.
The extension power sitting with Regional Passport Offices is genuinely useful and under-known: it means an in-country extension is a provincial-capital errand rather than an Islamabad one.
There is no investor-residence programme in Pakistan separate from this. The Board of Investment facilitates visas for registered foreign investors and their staff, but facilitation of an existing category is not a distinct residence route, and no published investment threshold buys residence.

Cost: Published on the NADRA online visa system; the family category is generally among the cheaper ones and free in some sub-categories.
Processing time: DGI&P publishes an indicative seven to ten days for the family visit category.

Worth knowing

For a foreign spouse of a Pakistani citizen, the POC is usually the better long-term answer than repeated family visas — it gives indefinite stay, the right to work, the right to hold property and exemption from police registration. Many spouses run visa renewals for years without applying for it.
Indian nationals are handled separately across every Pakistani visa category, including this one, with distinct rules and processing. If that applies to you, none of the general timelines above should be assumed.
The sponsor's documentation carries the file. A sponsor whose own CNIC or NICOP is expired will stall the application before it is even assessed.

Study Visa

Path to permanent residence: None. Graduating confers no right to remain and there is no post-study work route. Staying on requires an employer to sponsor a work visa from scratch.
Cost: Published on the NADRA online visa system. Tuition, not the visa, is the substantive cost.
Processing time: Institution-led and gated by the ministry NOC and the security clearance, both of which sit outside the university's control. Start a full term ahead.

Worth knowing

The ministry NOC is the real bottleneck, not the visa. Universities differ enormously in how competently they chase it, and a slow institution can cost you a semester.
Security clearance applies here as it does to work and missionary categories, and it is not a formality for every nationality.
There is no post-study work visa. Anyone treating a Pakistani degree as a foothold should understand that the foothold ends on graduation day unless an employer has already sponsored them.
