Moving from Armenia to Laos

What your passport gets you at the border — and what it takes to actually stay.

ArmeniaLaosShort stay
Visa on arrival

Armenia passport holders can get a visa on arrival in Laos — no application before you fly, but expect a fee and a queue at the border.

This is short-stay visitor policy only. It does not let you work, study or settle in Laos — that needs a residence permit.

How you actually move to Laos

LA-B2 work visa + work permit + stay permit card

Foreign employees of a Lao-registered employer — which in practice means companies, development agencies, NGOs, embassies and international schools. This is how the overwhelming majority of foreign residents are in Laos.

What you need
  • A Lao-registered employer willing to sponsor you and able to show it has quota headroom
  • A work permit issued by the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, applied for by the employer, not by you
  • The LA-B2 visa itself, issued in 3, 6 or 12-month validity
  • A stay permit card from the Department of Immigration — the visa and the permission to reside are separate documents
  • Qualifications or experience matching the role, plus the usual medical and police-clearance paperwork
How long it lasts
3, 6 or 12 months at a time, renewed while the employment and the work permit continue.
Path to permanent residence
None that can be stood up from official material. Laos is described in secondary sources as having a permanent-residence category, but the Department of Immigration publishes no ordinary application route into it and the specific category code circulating online traces only to commercial visa sites, so it is not stated here. In practice the work route renews indefinitely and does not settle — plan on that.
Cost
Government fees are modest, but the real cost is borne by the employer through the work-permit process and any quota-related charges. Figures quoted by agents vary widely and are not published in an accessible official schedule — get a written quote before assuming.
Processing time
Several weeks end to end. Employers going through the One-Stop Service for approved investments are told to expect around eight working days for the visa and stay-permit step alone, once the underlying approvals exist.
Worth knowing
  • The visa, the work permit and the stay permit are three separate documents from two ministries. Holding one is not holding the others, and it is normal for them to expire on different dates — diary all three.
  • Employers are subject to foreign-worker ratios under the 2013 Labour Law, commonly stated as 20% of the Lao workforce for manual roles and 25% for skilled roles. If your prospective employer has no headroom, no amount of your own qualification fixes it. Ask about quota before you accept an offer.
  • Doing this without an employer is genuinely hard. There is no freelance or self-sponsored permit; setting up your own Lao company to sponsor yourself is possible but is an investment exercise, not a visa shortcut.
  • Laos has no digital-nomad visa and no retirement visa. Remote workers cycling on tourist visas are living outside the system, not inside a designed one.

NI-B2 investor visa + stay permit card (One-Stop Service)

Approved investors, shareholders and company directors — people whose name is on the enterprise registration of a Lao business, not passive buyers.

What you need
  • An investment approved by the Government of Lao PDR: an investment or concession licence plus an enterprise registration certificate
  • Your name recorded in the company's registered documents as investor, shareholder or director
  • Application through the One-Stop Service at the Investment Promotion Department
  • Directors who are not shareholders need a work permit card first
How long it lasts
Ordinarily up to 12 months, renewable. Holders of concession agreements running ten years or more can be granted longer stay permits, in the three-to-five-year range.
Path to permanent residence
No published route from an investor visa to permanent residence.
Cost
Set administratively; the One-Stop Service does not publish a consolidated fee table in English.
Processing time
The One-Stop Service states approval takes eight official working days from registration of the request.
Worth knowing
  • This is a route for people making a real, approved investment in Laos — there is no property-purchase residence programme, and foreigners cannot own land in Laos at all (long leases and building ownership are the usual structures).
  • The visa and the stay permit card are separate; the stay permit card is what actually lets you live here and is applied for after arrival.
  • Laos's macroeconomy is a live consideration for anyone committing capital: the kip lost roughly 60% against the dollar between 2022 and 2025 before stabilising, and inflation, though falling, was still around 10% in 2026. Model your returns in kip as well as dollars.

ST-B2 study visa

Students and researchers enrolled at a recognised Lao institution — a small population, mostly on scholarships, language programmes or regional exchange schemes.

What you need
  • Acceptance or enrolment at an accredited Lao institution, which sponsors the application
  • Evidence of funding for tuition and living costs
How long it lasts
Tied to the programme, renewed while enrolled.
Path to permanent residence
None. Study time in Laos earns no settlement rights.
Cost
Modest visa fees; the institution normally handles the paperwork.
Processing time
Weeks, depending on how quickly the institution files.
Worth knowing
  • The study visa does not permit work, and there is no student work allowance.
  • Graduates who want to stay must find an employer with quota headroom and go through the ordinary LA-B2 work route — there is no post-study stay-back scheme.

SP-B3 spouse visa

Foreigners legally married to a Lao citizen.

What you need
  • A marriage to a Lao national that is legally recognised in Laos — registering a foreign marriage in Laos is itself a process, and marrying in Laos requires prior official approval
  • Sponsorship by the Lao spouse and, in practice, by the spouse's local authority
How long it lasts
Issued and renewed in increments; not a one-off grant.
Path to permanent residence
Marriage is the most plausible long-run route to settled status in Laos, but permanent residence remains discretionary and there is no published timetable. Do not treat it as automatic.
Cost
Modest government fees.
Processing time
Variable; local authority sign-off is often the slow step.
Worth knowing
  • A spouse visa does not by itself authorise work — employment still requires a work permit through the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare.
  • Foreign spouses still cannot own land in Laos. Property bought during a marriage is normally held in the Lao spouse's name, with all the consequences that implies if the marriage ends. Take Lao legal advice before buying anything.
