Before you start
- Valid work permit or special residence permit
- A registered Bhutanese mobile number
- Passport
- Employer letter confirming engagement
Step-by-step
- 1
Get a registered Bhutanese mobile number first
Banks require a registered local number to open an account, because account access and payment confirmation run through mobile. This has to happen before the bank visit.

Choose a bank
Bank of Bhutan is the largest and most branch-dense; Bhutan National Bank and T Bank are the main alternatives. All are regulated by the Royal Monetary Authority.
In personWho: You - 3
Apply in branch with your permit and passport
Bring the original permit and passport plus an employer letter. Foreigners cannot open accounts on tourist status — the permit is the gate.

Consider a foreign currency account if paid in hard currency
Foreigners remunerated in foreign currency can open foreign currency accounts, subject to Royal Monetary Authority approval. Ask explicitly — it is not offered by default.

Set up mobile banking
Bhutan's domestic payment rails are heavily mobile-based and QR payments are widely accepted, including by small vendors. Getting the app working matters more here than a card does.

Things most newcomers don’t know
The permit, the SIM and the account form a strict chain.
The bank needs your permit and a registered local number; the work permit now needs the bank account for engagements over 30 days. Done in the wrong order it feels circular. The workable sequence is: enter on the approved visa, register a SIM against your passport and visa, complete the permit, then open the account inside the first month.

This became a permit condition on 7 May 2026.
Before that, a local account was merely convenient. Guidance written earlier — which is most of it — treats banking as optional for short assignments. Anyone advising you from experience more than a year old will get this wrong.

Ask about a foreign currency account if you're paid abroad.
Bhutan manages foreign exchange actively and ngultrum is not freely convertible outside the country. If your salary arrives in dollars or euros, a foreign currency account with RMA approval avoids conversion you may not want.

Plan how you'll get money out, not just in.
The ngultrum is pegged to the Indian rupee and not convertible internationally. Repatriating savings is a process with rules, so understand it at the start of an assignment rather than at the end.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Arriving at a bank before you have a registered local mobile number.
- Assuming a tourist can open an account — the permit is mandatory.
- Treating the account as optional on an assignment longer than 30 days.
- Accumulating savings in ngultrum without understanding repatriation rules.
