Essential English phrases

The words that make your first weeks in Tampa smoother — with pronunciation you can actually say.

Culture

Ybor
EE-bor
Ybor City, the cigar district founded in 1885 by Vicente Martinez Ybor and built by Cuban, Spanish, Italian and Afro-Cuban workers. It is a National Historic Landmark District, and pronouncing it 'why-bore' identifies you instantly.
Gasparilla
gas-puh-RILL-uh
The January pirate invasion — a fully crewed galleon sails into the Hillsborough River, the city surrenders, and a parade follows down Bayshore. It is the local Mardi Gras and the single busiest day of the year.

Food

Cuban sandwich
KYOO-bun SAM-mich
Ham, roast pork, Swiss, pickle, mustard — and in Tampa, Genoa salami, which Miami's version omits. The salami came from Ybor's Italian community and the argument between the two cities is entirely sincere. Tampa's city council formally adopted its version as the city's signature sandwich.
Café con leche & Cuban bread
kah-FAY kon LEH-chay
Espresso with scalded milk, taken with buttered, toasted Cuban bread. La Segunda Central Bakery in Ybor has baked it since 1915 with a palmetto frond laid along the top of the loaf, which is what makes the crease.
Deviled crab
DEV-uld krab
Croqueta de jaiba — a torpedo of spiced crab in Cuban-bread crumb, invented in Ybor as cigar-factory lunch food. Sold from unmarked windows and gas-station counters, and one of the few genuinely endemic American foods.

Daily life

Tampa Bay
TAM-puh bay
The water, not the city. St Petersburg and Clearwater sit on the other side of it in PINELLAS County, with a separate government, separate schools and a separate property appraiser. 'Tampa Bay' as a place name mostly means the sports teams.
Unincorporated
un-in-KOR-puh-ray-tid
Hillsborough County has only three incorporated cities. Brandon, Carrollwood, Town 'n' Country and Riverview are unincorporated county — no mayor, no city hall, county services and county rules. It is where most of the metro actually lives.
Water Street
WAH-ter street
The multi-billion-dollar downtown district built out over the last decade beside the convention centre and the arena. It is the reason central Tampa now has walkable density it did not have in 2015, and the reason downtown rents moved.

Work

The Howard Frankland
HOW-erd FRANK-lund
The interstate bridge across the bay to Pinellas — the commute everyone complains about, and one of three crossings alongside the Courtney Campbell and the Gandy. Which bridge you use is a genuine identity marker.
Sinkhole / ground cover collapse
SINK-hohl
West-central Florida sits on karst limestone and this is the state's sinkhole belt. Insurers must offer catastrophic ground cover collapse cover; broader sinkhole cover is a separate, optional endorsement. It is a question you have to ask here and never have to ask on the Atlantic coast.
MacDill
mak-DILL
MacDill Air Force Base at the tip of the Interbay peninsula, the only US installation hosting two four-star combatant commands — Central Command and Special Operations Command. It shapes the local professional job market, and much of that work needs US citizenship and a clearance.

Emergency

Zone A
zohn ay
The first hurricane evacuation zone to be ordered out. Evacuation zones are about surge, not wind, and are unrelated to FEMA flood zones — Hillsborough redrew its zones recently, so an address's letter should be looked up fresh rather than remembered.
Lightning Alley
LITE-ning AL-ee
The corridor between Tampa and Orlando has the highest lightning frequency in the United States. Afternoon storms in summer are near-daily, brief and genuinely dangerous — outdoor pools and school sports stop the moment thunder is heard.
311
three-one-one
The City of Tampa's non-emergency service line and app — refuse, potholes, code complaints, water problems. Note it serves the CITY: an unincorporated address goes to Hillsborough County instead. 911 stays for emergencies.
