Establish which product you can open now
Some banks will open a limited account on a passport alone; the full resident product wants the residence card and LNCh. Ask explicitly for the non-resident product if you need banking before the permit arrives.

Choose a branch on English-language service
UniCredit Bulbank, DSK, UBB, Postbank and Fibank all offer comparable retail products. What differs branch to branch is whether the appointment can be conducted in English. Central Sofia and the Business Park branches are markedly better.

Confirm everything is now euro-denominated
Since the changeover all accounts, salaries and payments are in euro. If any document or system shows a lev figure, it is legacy data converted at 1.95583. Ask the bank to confirm the euro figure rather than converting yourself.

Use SEPA for European transfers
Bulgaria is inside the euro area, so a transfer to any other euro-area country is a domestic-equivalent SEPA payment — cheap, fast and without FX. This is a substantial change from before 2026 and one of the concrete benefits of adoption for anyone paid or paying across borders.

Keep some cash for the smaller economy
Card acceptance in Sofia is good and improving, but markets, some small shops outside the centre and some tradespeople still prefer cash. Euro notes and coins are now the only legal tender.

Keep the bank's copy of your residence card current
Banks re-verify identity documents periodically and will restrict an account whose residence card has expired on file. Send them the renewal when you collect it rather than waiting to be asked.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Euro adoption turned every cross-border euro payment into a domestic one, which is the change people underestimate.

Before 2026 a transfer from Bulgaria to Germany involved a currency conversion from leva and the fees that go with it. Since 1 January 2026 Bulgaria is inside the euro area, and a payment to any other euro-area country is a SEPA transfer settling at par with no FX. For anyone with income, family obligations or savings elsewhere in Europe, this quietly removed a recurring cost that most people had stopped noticing.

Lev figures in circulation are converted historic numbers, not live prices.

The lev was fixed to the euro for decades before adoption, so converting at 1.95583 gives an accurate historic equivalent. But salaries, rents, thresholds and fees have all been restated and, in many cases, rounded, and some have moved outright since. A lev figure tells you what something cost at some past date, not what it costs now. Ask for the euro figure from the source rather than doing the arithmetic yourself.

The 10% flat tax makes Bulgarian gross-to-net arithmetic unusually simple, and unusually favourable.

There are no bands, no allowance to phase out and no surcharges. Employee social contributions are also light by regional standards, around a seventh of gross against roughly a third in Romania. So a Bulgarian gross salary converts to net more efficiently than almost any comparable EU country, and the calculation you do on the back of an envelope is close to the real number. This is genuinely the country's headline fact rather than a marketing claim.

The residence card, not the passport, is what unlocks full banking — and the LNCh is on it.

Bulgarian banks key foreign customers on the LNCh, the personal number for foreigners issued with the residence card. Without it you are limited to whatever restricted product a given bank offers. This is the practical reason to press the Migration Directorate appointment early rather than treating the residence card as a formality to complete eventually.

Common mistakes to avoid

Working from lev figures found online rather than asking for the current euro figure.
Waiting for the residence card before approaching any bank at all.
Choosing a branch that will not conduct the appointment in English.
Using a non-SEPA route for a euro-area transfer out of habit.
