Residence visa, Emirates ID, and the RAKEZ self-sponsorship route
The mechanics are federal. Your sponsor obtains the work permit and the ICP entry permit; you complete a medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics; the residence visa is issued digitally, with no sticker in the passport. The Emirates ID is your proof of residency and the key to banking, a postpaid SIM, a registered tenancy and a driving licence, and the file must be completed within 60 days of entry. What is distinctive about Ras Al Khaimah is who the sponsor usually is: RAKEZ licences a company for a fraction of Dubai free-zone costs, and that company then sponsors visas for you and your family, which makes self-sponsorship a realistic path rather than a luxury one.

If your licence is from one of roughly fifty to fifty-seven approved countries โ the GCC, the UK, most of the EU and EEA, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, China, South Africa and others โ you can swap it for a UAE licence with no lessons and no road test: an eye test, a legal translation if it is not in English or Arabic, and the fee. Holders of non-approved licences must open a traffic file, train at a licensed institute and pass theory, yard and road tests. An expatriate UAE licence is valid five years; ten years applies only to UAE and GCC citizens. Public transport in RAK is thin, distances are large, and the emirate's best features โ Jebel Jais, the wadis, the beaches โ are all reached by car.

UAE banks are federally licensed and work across all seven emirates, so living in Ras Al Khaimah does not restrict your choice โ RAKBANK is headquartered here, but you can bank with anyone. The genuine difficulty in this emirate is corporate: opening a business account for a new free-zone company is a slow, documentation-heavy compliance exercise, and banks routinely decline small free-zone entities with no local substance. Health insurance is mandatory for every UAE resident, but the mandating authority differs by emirate. Dubai has its own scheme under the Dubai Health Authority and Abu Dhabi one under its Department of Health. Ras Al Khaimah has neither, which is exactly why the federal basic health insurance scheme took effect on 1 January 2025 through MoHRE and the Ministry of Health and Prevention, covering private-sector workers and domestic workers in Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. The basic package starts from AED 320 a year and the employer buys it. In a smaller emirate the network question matters more than the price: check which local hospitals are in it before you need one.

SIMs are registered biometrically against your Emirates ID, or against a passport for a visitor line, and are sold at operator shops, kiosks and self-service machines. Prepaid is instant; postpaid needs an Emirates ID and usually a salary certificate. Home internet coverage is divided between the two operators building by building, so you generally get whichever one is installed rather than the one with the better offer โ and in RAK, where development is dispersed and some communities are new or still building out, that variation is wider than in a dense city. Mobile coverage is good on the coastal plain and patchy in the mountains and wadis.

The UAE levies no personal income tax and Ras Al Khaimah adds none. VAT is 5% on most goods and services. Federal corporate tax of 9% applies to taxable profits above AED 375,000, and a free-zone company only obtains the 0% rate on qualifying income if it meets substance and qualifying-activity conditions โ which matters disproportionately here because so many foreigners come for the cheap RAKEZ licence. There is no annual property tax, no tax on rental income and no capital gains tax on property. RAKEZ is the real reason most foreigners end up here
CriticalThe Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone sells company licences at a fraction of Dubai's free-zone prices โ entry-level zero-visa packages start in the low thousands of dirhams a year against several times that in Dubai's better-known zones โ while giving you the same UAE legal framework, the same visa machinery and the same zero personal income tax. For a solo consultant, a small trading company or a remote founder, that cost difference is the whole argument. What you give up is proximity: RAK is about 100 km from Dubai, which is a trip rather than a commute.
This is a freehold emirate, and that makes it different from Sharjah
CriticalBuyers of any nationality can acquire genuine freehold title in Ras Al Khaimah's designated zones โ Al Hamra Village, Mina Al Arab, Al Marjan Island and Al Mairid among them โ with no annual property tax, no tax on rental income and no capital gains tax. That is a materially different proposition from Sharjah, where what is generally available to non-Arab expatriates is a long usufruct rather than freehold. If ownership is part of your plan, the emirate you choose decides what you actually get.
Everything here is RAK's own, not Dubai's and not Abu Dhabi's
CriticalTenancy contracts are registered with RAK Municipality's real-estate service, at a fixed AED 25 plus a percentage of the lease value โ Dubai's Ejari and Abu Dhabi's Tawtheeq have no application. Electricity and water come from Etihad Water and Electricity, the federal utility that replaced FEWA in the northern emirates, not from DEWA. Driving licences run through the Ministry of Interior channel and RAK Police, not the RTA. Almost every UAE guide online is really a Dubai guide.
The casino resort is genuinely reshaping the emirate
ImportantWynn Resorts received the first commercial gaming operator licence in the UAE from the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority in October 2024, for a multi-billion-dollar integrated resort on Al Marjan Island targeting a 2027 opening. Whatever you think of casinos, the practical consequences are already visible: a construction and hospitality hiring wave, sharply rising property prices on and around Al Marjan, and a hotel pipeline that will change what the emirate is for. If you are buying property here, this is the variable driving the market.
You are an hour from Dubai, which is a weekend trip, not a commute
ImportantRas Al Khaimah sits roughly 100 km north of Dubai โ about an hour on a clear road, considerably more at the wrong time. People who take a RAKEZ licence expecting to pop down for meetings usually discover they do it far less often than they planned. Treat Dubai as a place you visit deliberately, and choose RAK for what it is rather than as a cheap suburb of somewhere else.
Jebel Jais gives you a mountain climate the rest of the UAE does not have
Good to knowAt around 1,900 metres, the UAE's highest peak sits in this emirate, and in winter it is cold enough for a jacket and occasionally for frost. There is a road to the top, the world's longest zipline, and a hiking and camping culture that has grown quickly. Combined with the Gulf beaches on the other side of the emirate, RAK offers a genuine outdoor life that a Dubai address does not.

Where to go in Ras Al Khaimah
Jebel Jais
Nature ยท Hajar mountains, ~1 hour inland
The highest peak in the UAE at around 1,900 metres, reached by a spectacular switchback road, with the world's longest zipline running off it.
Local tip: Go in winter with a jacket โ it genuinely gets cold, which is the whole point. The viewing decks near the summit are free and far less crowded than the paid attractions on weekdays.
Al Marjan Island
Neighborhood ยท Coral-shaped islands off the south coast
Four man-made islets of beach resorts and residences, and the site of the UAE's first integrated casino resort.
Local tip: Worth walking now, while it is still half-built, because it will not look like this again. The public beach stretches are quieter mid-week than anything comparable in Dubai.
Al Jazirah Al Hamra
Hidden gemLandmark ยท South of the city, near Al Hamra
An abandoned coastal pearling village of coral-block houses, a mosque and a fort, left largely as it was when its inhabitants departed in the 1960s.
Local tip: One of the last intact pre-oil towns in the Gulf and eerily quiet at dusk. Go in cooler months and give it an hour โ it explains more about what the Emirates were than any museum does.
Dhayah Fort
Landmark ยท North of the city, above the palm plantations
A hilltop fort reached by a steep stair, the last stand of the 1819 campaign, with views over date palms to the sea on one side and the mountains on the other.
Local tip: Climb it late in the afternoon. The fort itself is small; the reason to go is the 360-degree view over the only landscape in the UAE where mountains, palm oasis and sea are all in one frame.
The Hajar wadis โ Wadi Shawka and Wadi Ghalilah
Hidden gemNature ยท Mountain interior
Rock pools, hiking trails and the Stairway to Heaven scramble in canyons that cut back into the mountains from the plain.
Local tip: Wadi Shawka is the accessible one and busy at weekends; Ghalilah is serious hiking and needs preparation. Go early, take far more water than you think, and tell someone your route.
The old town & the National Museum
Culture ยท RAK city, by the creek
The Al Qawasim fort turned museum, beside a working creek, a fish market and the remains of the old pearling town.
Local tip: The archaeology section covering the pre-Islamic Julfar settlement is the strongest part, and the fish market on the creek at dawn is the most ordinary and most authentic thing in the emirate.
