Read your own foreign ministry's advice and get the insurance answer in writing
The FCDO's list of areas it advises against all travel to names Peshawar explicitly, alongside most of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Most travel and health insurance is void in such an area. Specialist policies exist and are what humanitarian organisations use. Do not discover the gap after an incident — get the policy number and the geographic scope on paper before you accept the job.

Test your POC and NICOP eligibility before any visa file is opened
POC is for foreign nationals of Pakistani origin — former citizens, descendants, foreign spouses — and NADRA states that it carries visa-free entry, indefinite stay, exemption from foreigners' registration reporting, property and banking rights and eligibility for employment. NICOP is for people who are still Pakistani citizens. Either ends the visa question outright.

Applications run through visa.nadra.gov.pk with the sponsor letter, registration certificate and tax registration. DGI&P publishes the entry visa at up to three months; the real stay comes from the in-country extension.

Keep the Form-C issued at arrival
The FIA's guidance is that you give the immigration officer details of your visit on arrival and receive a copy of Form-C. File it. It underpins any subsequent registration and is far easier to keep than to reconstruct.

Expect to be registered by your landlord as well as by immigration
Separately from the Registration of Foreigners Rules 1966 — which impose a police-registration duty on nationals of India and Somalia and on anyone immigration directs — Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Restriction of Rented Buildings (Security) Act 2014 requires your landlord to file a Tenant Information Form at the local police station, giving your passport number in place of a CNIC. This applies to every tenant in the province, not only foreign ones, and there is no Punjab or Sindh equivalent.

Treat restricted-area NOCs as a standing process, not a per-trip errand
A Ministry of Interior No Objection Certificate is required for travel to designated restricted and prohibited areas, which in this province means the merged districts and the frontier belt — precisely where a lot of Peshawar-based programme work goes. Establish the current requirement and lead time through your organisation before planning any field movement.

Start the extension two to three months before expiry
Extensions are lodged online and worked by DGI&P, with the security clearance attached to this stage rather than to the first grant. Two weeks' notice is how people end up out of status through nobody's fault.

Things most newcomers don’t know

The travel advisory is not background colour — it is the operative fact about living here as a foreigner.

The FCDO's warnings list names 'Peshawar, including the city of Peshawar' among the areas it advises against all travel to. That rating voids most ordinary insurance, triggers employers' highest duty-of-care tier, and is why the foreign professionals here are overwhelmingly employed by organisations with their own security apparatus rather than by ordinary companies. It is also why the practical texture of expatriate life differs from Lahore's: movement is often planned, escorted or curfewed by policy rather than by law. None of that describes life for the two million Pakistanis who live here — it describes the specific position of a foreign national with an employer's risk register attached.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa your landlord is legally required to hand your details to the police, and the form names you as a foreigner.

The Tenant Information Form published by KP Police under the Restriction of Rented Buildings (Security) Act 2014 is filled in by the owner, filed at the police station, and requires an attested rent agreement plus attested identity documents for the owner, the property dealer, the tenant and two references for the tenant. Its instructions say in terms that a foreign or Afghan tenant supplies a passport number or Afghan Citizen Card number where a CNIC would go. Nothing like this exists in Punjab or Sindh. Arrange your two references before you view anything, and do not accept a landlord's offer to skip it — the duty is his, but the exposure when it is not done lands on the tenancy.

There is no ladder here, which paradoxically makes the decision easier.

Pakistan has no points system, no qualifying residence period and nothing that ripens into permanent residence. Ten years of renewed work visas leaves you exactly where one year does. In a posting with the risk profile Peshawar carries, that is worth knowing early: there is no immigration reason to stay longer than the job justifies, no penalty for a gap, and no clock to protect. The only durable status is one you inherit, through NADRA's Pakistan Origin Card.

The restricted-area NOC list is real, consequential and not publishable with confidence from outside Pakistan.

No Objection Certificates issued through the Ministry of Interior are required for designated restricted and prohibited areas, and from Peshawar that bites immediately — the merged districts and the frontier belt are where a great deal of KP-based programme work happens. We could not confirm the current designated-area list or the present procedure against the ministry's own site, which is not reachable from outside Pakistan, and we are not going to guess at it on a page people use to plan movement. Get the current position from your organisation's security focal point or a Pakistani mission, and build weeks of lead time into any field plan.

Common mistakes to avoid

Accepting a Peshawar posting without confirming in writing that your insurance is valid in an all-travel-advised-against area.
Opening a work visa file when a POC application would have ended the problem.
Confusing NICOP and POC and applying for the one your citizenship excludes.
Signing a tenancy without lining up the two references the KP police form requires.
Planning field travel to the merged districts on the assumption an NOC is a same-week formality.
Leaving the visa extension to the last fortnight when a security clearance sits on it.
