O!, MEGA and Beeline all have shops in central Osh. SIM registration against an identity document is compulsory nationally, so bring the passport itself for this errand rather than the notarised copy you carry the rest of the time. Coverage across all three is broadly comparable in the city; the difference shows up on the roads out.

Add a data bundle — and choose the operator for the routes you travel
Monthly bundles with large or effectively unlimited data run in the low hundreds of som. Within Osh any operator is fine. If you regularly drive the Alay valley, the road to Sary-Tash or the Uzgen and Kara-Suu corridors, ask locally which network holds up on your specific route — the answer changes by direction and is not something a coverage map will tell you honestly.

Sort home internet — check the flat, not the building
Fibre reaches most modern apartment blocks in Osh and monthly cost is low. Many furnished rentals include a connection, so ask before ordering. Older stock and the private-sector housing on the city edge are much more variable, and in parts of the outer microdistricts the honest answer is that mobile data is the better connection.

Keep the number alive — it is your key to the bank and the state
Bank one-time codes, the Tunduk state services portal, the Digital Nomad platform and most government interaction route through SMS to a Kyrgyz number. Letting a prepaid SIM lapse while you are out of the country locks you out of your bank and your immigration file simultaneously. Set a recurring top-up and forget about it.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Roaming across the border is the trap here, not coverage inside the city.

Andijan is 50 km away and the Uzbek and Tajik networks reach into the valleys around Osh. A phone left on automatic network selection near the border, or on the road south, can latch onto a foreign network and start billing international roaming without any obvious signal that it has. Lock the network manually if you spend time near the frontier.

Data is cheap enough that tethering beats a fixed line in a lot of Osh housing.

Monthly bundles cost a couple of dollars and fibre penetration in the older stock and the private sector is patchy. For a single remote worker in an outer microdistrict, mobile is frequently the faster and more reliable option — the calculation depends on the specific building rather than the district.

Your Kyrgyz number is infrastructure, and there is no southern workaround if you lose it.

The state digitised around SMS to a +996 number: Tunduk, the tax service, the Digital Nomad platform and every banking app. Recovering a lapsed number or a locked account is an errand, and the offices that can escalate it are largely in Bishkek. Prevention is much cheaper than the flight.

Coverage on the Pamir Highway is not a network problem you can solve with a better SIM.

Once you are past Sary-Tash there is very little of anything, and the Tajik side is worse. Anyone heading south for more than a day trip should be carrying a satellite communicator and a plan, not a data bundle. This is a genuine difference from living in the capital, where 'out of town' means Ala-Archa.
