    Try the tram and the buses before you buy a car

    The two NET tram lines run from the north of the city through the centre to Clifton and to Chilwell via Beeston, with park-and-ride sites at the ends of both. Nottingham City Transport is majority-owned by the council and is consistently among the best-rated bus operations in the country. Between them they cover a large share of the city properly, which is a direct result of the levy money.

Whatever you think of the charge, the two tram lines and the council-owned bus network it paid for are the reason living car-free here is realistic in a way it is not in Leeds or Sheffield.

Sheffield charges vans and taxis, Bradford charges more, Birmingham and Bristol charge private cars. An older vehicle costs nothing in Nottingham and can cost daily on a Birmingham job — check each city, not the country.

Twelve months on a foreign licence, and then it simply stops.
