RAAF Base Williamtown anchors a real defence and aerospace cluster around the Astra Aerolab precinct, and a large share of that work requires an Australian security clearance — which requires citizenship, not permanent residency. If defence is your sector, understand that a substantial part of Newcastle's most attractive engineering work is closed to you until several years after you arrive.

The energy transition is a genuine migration argument here, not a slogan.

A declared offshore wind zone off the coast, the Hunter–Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone, a port trying to diversify out of coal and a smelter drawing a large share of the state's electricity all sit inside an hour. Engineering, project management, electrical trades and environmental science attached to that pipeline are exactly the occupations that stay on skilled lists. It also means the region carries a real structural risk if the transition stalls.
