Opening an account, and the rial's three decimal places

The resident card is the prerequisite, and until it exists nothing happens. Once it does, opening is straightforward at any of the main banks with the card, passport, a salary certificate and a tenancy or address proof. Salaries for private-sector employees are paid into local accounts under the Wage Protection System, so the account is not optional. The thing to internalise early is the currency: the rial is worth about USD 2.60 and divides into a thousand baisa, so prices carry three decimals and small-looking numbers are large.

Total cost
Opening is generally free. The variables are minimum balance requirements and remittance spreads. VAT at 5% applies to some banking fees.
Time needed
Under an hour in branch once the resident card exists.
Validity
The account tracks your residence and can be restricted if the card lapses. Keep the address current β€” in a city stretched across fifty kilometres, people move district more often than they expect to.

Medium confidenceΒ·New residents opening a first Omani account. Banking is national and supervised by the Central Bank of Oman. Assumes an employed resident with a resident card.

Before you start

  • A valid resident card
  • Passport with the employment visa
  • A salary certificate or employment letter from your sponsor
  • Proof of address β€” a registered tenancy contract or a utility bill

Step-by-step

  1. 1

Plan the pre-card weeks as a cash-flow problem

Between landing and the resident card you cannot open an account. Muscat rents are monthly rather than annual, which softens this considerably compared with Saudi Arabia or Qatar, but you will still need a deposit and a first month. Know your home bank's foreign charges and daily withdrawal limits before you fly.

  2. 2

Choose the bank on branch and ATM reach, not branding

Bank Muscat has by far the widest network and is the default for that reason; Sohar International, NBO and Bank Dhofar are the main alternatives, and HSBC is useful if you need continuity with an account abroad. In a fifty-kilometre strip city, where the branches are matters more than it would elsewhere.

Open in branch with the resident card and salary certificate

Most banks open the account in a single visit with complete documents, issuing the debit card immediately or by post. Bring originals. Some banks support app onboarding for residents, which is worth asking about.

  4. 4

Give payroll the IBAN and confirm the Wage Protection System entry

Private-sector wages are paid into local accounts under the Wage Protection System, which gives you a record and an enforcement route if payment is late. Confirm the first payment lands and that you appear correctly in the employer's submission.

  5. 5

Set up utility, telecom and government payments in the app

Electricity, water, telecoms and government fees all pay through the banking apps. Setting them up in the first month removes most counter visits, which in a city this shape is a genuine time saving.

Set up a remittance route and compare the total received

Muscat has a dense exchange-house sector alongside bank transfers. The spread between providers is material on a regular remittance. Compare the amount actually received rather than the advertised fee, and send a small test first.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Three decimal places on the most valuable currency in the region will cost you at least once.

One Omani rial is 1,000 baisa and is worth roughly USD 2.60, so prices are written like OMR 12.750 and 'five hundred baisa' is half a rial. Arrivals from dollar or euro economies routinely misread a figure by a factor of two or three in their first weeks, and by a factor of a thousand when reading baisa as cents. The expensive version of this mistake happens on a car purchase or a rental deposit. Read prices aloud until the three decimals stop looking like a typo.

Monthly rent means Oman is far cheaper to arrive in than its neighbours.

The Gulf's defining relocation cost is the year of rent demanded up front in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Muscat runs on monthly rent with a deposit, and Muscat Municipality's ordinance additionally blocks any rent increase for the first three years of a continuous tenancy. The practical effect is that the cash you need on arrival is a fraction of what a Riyadh or Doha move requires, and your housing cost is fixed for three years. Very few package comparisons capture either point.

Where the branches are matters more in Muscat than in a normal city.

The capital is a strip more than fifty kilometres long with one main highway and no dense centre. A bank whose branches are concentrated at the Seeb end is genuinely inconvenient if you live in Qurum, in a way that would be trivial in a compact city. Before choosing, look at the branch and ATM map against your actual home and office, not at the marketing. This applies to clinics, schools and gyms too.

Confirm the Wage Protection System entry rather than assuming payroll worked.

Private-sector wages in Oman are paid into local accounts under the Wage Protection System, which creates a record and gives you a route if payment is late or short. A mis-keyed IBAN or an unregistered employee record does not produce an error message β€” it produces a missing first salary, discovered at the end of the month when rent is due. Confirm the first payment landed and that your record exists correctly.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Trying to open an account before the resident card exists.
  • Misreading three-decimal rial prices in the first month, particularly on a car or a deposit.
  • Choosing a bank whose branch network sits at the wrong end of a fifty-kilometre city.
  • Assuming the first salary landed rather than confirming it.
  • Comparing remittance providers on advertised fees rather than the amount actually received.
