Spain maintains a list of countries whose licences can be exchanged without testing. It is specific and does not track how developed a country's driving standards are. Check the DGT list before assuming anything.

Act inside the six-month window
You may generally drive on a valid foreign licence for six months after becoming resident. After that it is not valid here regardless of its expiry date, and driving on it is an offence with insurance consequences. This is much shorter than the UK's twelve months.

Get the psychotechnical medical certificate
Spain requires a fitness assessment at an authorised centro de reconocimiento de conductores — a short medical including vision and reaction testing. Quick, inexpensive and required for both exchange and a new licence.

Book the DGT appointment and submit
Exchange applications go through the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico in Murcia with the medical certificate, the padrón certificate, your TIE, photographs and the fee. Your foreign licence is surrendered as part of the process.

Judge the car question by where you will actually live
The central districts are flat, compact and served by buses and a tram line to the university and the north — genuinely liveable without a car. The pedanías are not: bus service to the outlying districts is thinner and slower than the distances suggest. Decide the neighbourhood and the car together rather than in sequence.

Plan around the airports honestly
Corvera is close but thin on routes, and most journeys route through Alicante-Elche about an hour away. High-speed rail from Madrid arrived in December 2022 and further Mediterranean Corridor works continue. Check the actual timetable for the places you need to reach rather than assuming a nearby airport covers it.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Six months, not twelve — the Spanish window is shorter than most people assume.

Residents coming from the UK or the US often carry over an assumption that they have a year. In Spain a foreign licence generally stops being valid six months after you become resident. Driving after that is an offence and can leave you effectively uninsured in an accident. Start the process in month one, not month five.

The bilateral agreement list is arbitrary from a driver's point of view.

Whether you exchange or retest depends on a treaty between Spain and your country, not on your experience or your country's road safety record. Some countries people expect to be on the list are not. Checking takes five minutes on the DGT site and it determines whether the next step is a form or a year of autoescuela lessons.

The pedanía you choose decides whether you need a car, not the city.

Central Murcia is compact, flat and bus- and tram-served, and plenty of residents there have no car. The outlying pedanías are effectively villages inside the same municipality, with bus services that are infrequent enough to structure your day around. Because the rent gap between the two is large, the honest comparison is central rent against outlying rent plus a car and its running costs.

The gota fría is a driving hazard, not just a weather event.

Autumn cut-off storms in this region can drop extraordinary rainfall in hours onto ground that absorbs almost nothing, and the ramblas — normally dry watercourses — fill in minutes. Most deaths in these events involve vehicles driven into flooded crossings. The rule locals follow is absolute: never drive into standing water on a rambla crossing, however shallow it looks, and treat regional weather warnings as instructions.
