January routinely sits below −15°C and −25°C nights happen. Nothing shuts down — the ploughs are excellent, the skyway keeps downtown functioning and people go to work regardless. What you need is a genuinely rated parka, insulated boots, and either a garage or a block heater for the car. Budget a few hundred dollars for kit in your first autumn and the winter becomes an inconvenience rather than a crisis.
