There is no post-arrival registration in the US: your I-94 record is your status. In the first weeks you need a Social Security number if work-authorised, or an ITIN if not. Minnesota's specific features are at the licensing counter: since October 2023 the state issues a standard, non-REAL-ID licence to residents regardless of immigration status, and separately it offers an Enhanced Driver's License that works as a border document for driving into Canada. Choosing between standard, REAL ID and Enhanced is a decision you make once, at the counter, so decide before you go.

CriticalMinnesota is one of a small number of states running a Basic Health Program. If your income is above the Medical Assistance ceiling but still modest, MinnesotaCare covers you at low monthly premiums instead of pushing you onto a marketplace plan with a deductible. Most newcomers have never heard of it because almost no state has an equivalent, and MNsure's own application screens for it — but only if you apply there rather than buying a plan directly from an insurer.
Income tax runs to 9.85%, but clothing is not taxed at all
CriticalMinnesota has four brackets topping out at 9.85%, among the highest state rates in the country, and there is no local income tax in Minneapolis on top. The offset is unusual: clothing and most groceries are entirely exempt from sales tax, which is why people drive here from neighbouring states to shop. Budget for the income tax, but do not import a sales-tax assumption from anywhere else.

Winter here is equipment, not endurance
ImportantJanuary routinely sits below −15°C and −25°C nights happen. Nothing shuts down — the ploughs are excellent, the skyway keeps downtown functioning and people go to work regardless. What you need is a genuinely rated parka, insulated boots, and either a garage or a block heater for the car. Budget a few hundred dollars for kit in your first autumn and the winter becomes an inconvenience rather than a crisis.

Where to go in Minneapolis
The Minneapolis Skyway System
Landmark · Downtown
Around 9.5 miles of enclosed second-floor bridges connecting roughly 80 blocks — the largest continuous skyway network in the world.
Local tip: It is privately owned property on public land, so hours vary by building and much of it closes evenings and weekends. The winter shortcut that works at 8am on a Tuesday will not work at 8pm on a Saturday.
Minnehaha Regional Park
Nature · South Minneapolis
A 16-metre waterfall inside the city limits, dropping into a limestone gorge that runs down to the Mississippi.
Local tip: Go in January when the falls freeze into a hollow ice column you can walk behind — that is the version locals turn out for, not the summer one.
Walker Art Center & the Sculpture Garden
Culture · Lowry Hill
One of the strongest contemporary art collections in the US, beside a sculpture garden containing Claes Oldenburg's Spoonbridge and Cherry.
Local tip: The garden is free and open year round, and it is at its best under snow. The Walker itself has free evenings on a regular schedule — check before paying.
Midtown Global Market

A former Sears warehouse turned into a market hall of dozens of independent, largely immigrant-owned food stalls and shops.
Local tip: East African, Mexican, Vietnamese, Tibetan and Scandinavian counters within thirty metres of each other. It is also the fastest correction available to anyone who arrived expecting a monocultural city.
The Grand Rounds & the Chain of Lakes
Nature · Southwest Minneapolis and the river
A roughly 50-mile scenic byway of parkways, lakes and river bluffs — the spine of a park system repeatedly ranked at or near the top in the US.
Local tip: The lake loops are ploughed and used all winter, and the walking and cycling paths are separated. In February people cross-country ski and fat-bike them; in summer the Bde Maka Ska loop is the city's front garden.
Northeast Minneapolis Arts District
Neighborhood · Nordeast
Old Polish and Ukrainian parish blocks and grain-era warehouses turned into the highest concentration of artist studios and breweries in the state.
Local tip: Art-A-Whirl on the third weekend of May opens hundreds of studios at once and is the single best day of the year to understand the neighbourhood. The rest of the year, go on a first Thursday.
