Test whether you need a car at all
The rnv tram network covers the city densely and runs across the Rhine into Ludwigshafen and out to Heidelberg; the VRN fare area spans Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and part of Hesse, and the Deutschlandticket at EUR 63 a month covers all of it. Mannheim is also flat and heavily cycled — the Neckar and Rhine paths do most of the work.

Find your country on the exchange list
Germany maintains a country-by-country schedule in Anlage 11 to the Fahrerlaubnis-Verordnung: some exchange freely, some require a theory test, some a practical, some both. For the United States, Canada and Australia the treatment depends on the individual state or province.

Act inside the six-month window

Get a translation, eyesight test and first aid certificate

Get the green badge for the Umweltzone
Mannheim operates a low emission zone and only green-badge vehicles may enter. Buy the Plakette at a testing station or garage before your first drive into the city, and check current rules before buying an older diesel.

Plan around the Quadrate rather than through them
The centre is a one-way grid with heavy pedestrianisation on the Planken and very little street parking. Locals park in a Parkhaus on the ring and walk in. Trying to drive to a specific Quadrat is the single most reliable way to lose twenty minutes in this city.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Your fare network crosses two state borders and your ticket does not care.

The VRN covers Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and part of Hesse as one tariff area, and the Deutschlandticket covers the lot. Commuting from Mannheim to Ludwigshafen, Worms or Heidelberg is a single fare and no thought. It is worth knowing precisely because so many other things about crossing that border do change.

For US, Canadian and Australian licences the answer depends on your state or province.

Germany's exchange arrangements with federal countries are negotiated per state, and the schedule that governs it is Anlage 11 to the Fahrerlaubnis-Verordnung. One US state may exchange with no test while its neighbour requires both theory and practical. Look up your specific issuing jurisdiction rather than your country.

Mannheim Hauptbahnhof is worth more to you than a car.

It is one of the busiest long-distance junctions in Germany: Frankfurt airport in around half an hour, Stuttgart, Cologne and Basel all direct, and Paris reachable without changing. For anyone whose job involves travel, living within walking distance of it is a bigger lifestyle decision than which car to buy.
