Budget for the annual motor vehicle property tax
Kentucky levies an annual property tax on vehicles and boats, assessed on value and paid to the county clerk. It falls due with your registration renewal in your birth month, so the first bill lands whenever your birthday next comes round rather than at a fixed point in the year.

Plan around a city built for cars, with one useful exception
Lexington is a ring-road city and most journeys assume a car. The exception is the University of Kentucky partnership with Lextran, which lets students and staff ride every city route free on a UK ID — enough to make a household's second car genuinely optional.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Ten days for the vehicle is the tightest clock in the move.

Kentucky requires insurance, title and registration within 10 days of establishing residency — a third of the 30 days it allows for the licence. Nearly every other state makes the licence the tighter deadline, so the instinct to deal with the licence first is exactly wrong here.

The annual vehicle property tax is a real cost, not a small fee.

Kentucky taxes motor vehicles as property every year, assessed on value and collected by the county clerk with your registration renewal. On a newer car it runs to several hundred dollars annually. Newcomers who budgeted for a flat plate fee are caught out, and it falls in your birth month rather than at a fixed time of year.

Insurance must come from a Kentucky-authorised company, dated within 45 days.

The clerk checks both, and an existing out-of-state policy will not satisfy either. If you are driving into the state, arranging Kentucky cover before you arrive removes the most common reason for a wasted first visit.

A UK ID is a free citywide bus pass.

The University of Kentucky and Lextran run a partnership under which students and staff ride any Lextran route free on a valid UK ID. Given the university is the largest employer in the city, that is a genuinely material transport subsidy that nothing in the state-level guidance mentions.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming the licence deadline is the tighter one. In Kentucky it is not.
Arriving at the county clerk with an out-of-state insurance certificate.
Going to the courthouse for a licence rather than a Driver Licensing Regional Office.
Budgeting for a flat registration fee and meeting an annual value-based vehicle property tax.
Buying a second car before checking whether a UK ID would cover the commute for free.
